Ken, if you were to sure a powered PA speaker for practice and to monitor live, what brand/model would you or have you chosen? You know... Something fairly accurate where your not flexing too much to adjust your bass tones between live an recording, other than maybe tweaking a bass or treble control, but leaving the rest the same... In that note, I remember the first time I heard fantastic planet and how fantastic it sounded and how fantastic the sounds were! It surely deserved more airtime! It accompanied me through some hard times.

Hey Ken, we wear the same glasses! 🤘 I'm quite impressed with what Fractal brought to your live performance videos. I always found that guitars seemed to be temperamental in live mixes (for video). Fractal seems to translate your rig into a stable and consistent approximation to the recorded versions of your mixes. I dig it. Thanks for playing through Saturday Saviour. Sounded great! Regards, -Nick

"....are we interested in this stuff?!!" Yes, I still am. Very much so. I studied recording engineering in the late 90's in London, ON. While I was there, I made friends with two other students and we became inseparable. The school had two analog studios, both equipped with 2inch/24 track, 1/4 inch for mixing down, DAT, ADAT, outboard effects etc...). In the daytime they'd be used for classes, but our studio time was often overnight. We would grab coffee, hop in our friend's car in the dead of night in the middle of the frigid Canadian winter and would drive into the studio for our timeslot - normally 2am to 8am. Fantastic Planet the soundtrack for all of that. It also became somewhat of an obsessive unobtainable goal for us....how the heck did they do that? We were learning "classic" recording techniques at school and there was no KZbin. All these year later, to be able to sit and watch as you reveal your techniques is so meaningful to me. The music was so much larger than than anything we were doing. I just wish the younger me had been able to see that you guys were no different than us. Thank you SO much for the music!!

Magnified is my favorite Failure album and one of my favorites of all time tbh. Wish I loved the remixed and re-recorded Magnified . Any plans to release the original Magnified untouched and only remastered? Thanks! Love you and thanks for all the music

If guitars are layered how do you play live? I know a lot of bands will use backing tracks. So the guitar on stage is being played live, but there might be a recording also playing.

Man I’m so excited to hear year of the rabbit remastered, it’s one of my favorite albums. And I can’t wait to see the documentary. If it’s possible ever, remastering the Golden album on vinyl would be amazing, or even just copy pasting it on vinyl. I’d buy it in a heartbeat. Mange is my favorite song of yours and if that album was on vinyl or released as an actual cd I’d be all over it.

I recently got myself my dream bass for my 40th… you can guess what it is. The sound that’s been in my head since I started playing when I was 12, the sound I’ve been largely failing to will out of countless other instruments is FINALLY in my hands. Hate myself for waiting this long. Anyway… I had somehow managed to avoid going down the Failure rabbit hole before getting this thing, but holy fuck am I glad I’m here. This channel of yours is AMAZING! I’m so grateful for the time you’ve put into sharing your passion, going into all this detail sharing the tricks… I can’t wait to devour it all. This video is a particularly surprising treat! While I’m not a filmmaker myself, some of my closest friends are and my wife is a photographer. I found this glimpse into ‘90s sausage-making absolutely fascinating. I often think about the “pressure” of burning through 2” tape back in the day and what that does to the vibe in the studio… but this is orders of magnitude more scary. The result is spectacular. You’ve got great ears, eyes and taste. Thanks again for sharing all this!

Man, I'm so happy I found your channel. It's is unbelievable that you have 17k subs only. 🤯 Man people pay for these kind of information. I also wanted to ask - it sounds like bass guitar was compressed on the way in, right? I mean still sounds like a DI, just too even and a waveform also looked like it was compressed.

I feel of Failure now like that one secret corner food place that made the greatest food and no one knew about & you could eat there alone without no one bugging you or that record store no one knew about either & you could go & shop & find the greatest things in there, but now after all these new fans or jump in the wagon posers, it doesn't feel the same, I do not blame the band, it's all commercialized.

I don't think Failure has gotten huge particularly, they've been one of those "bands' bands " for 20+ years now. Much like Swervedriver in the UK, they have a small but extremely dedicated following.

Wow, YotR update! this was unexpected, thanks!. While I like YotR a lot, I remember Jeff Gaber's ephemeral band called The Joy Circuit. They reminded me of Failure, they were also great. I always loved you two guys. Don't know where is he now, apparently making music for films. I'd love to see him again, though it will be easier to see Failure during the next tour. Love!

Any particular reason you compress before hitting the amp? I never much see rock guitar players using compression (unless it's strictly for leads, etc)
