The post inside the cabin is not the lower half of the mast, it's a compression post that carries the downward load of the mast to the keel. And the fitting was corroded originally by having two dissimilar metals in close contact and with an electrolytic like salt water creating a conductive current. Ideally that would be replaced with a stainless fitting for the mast step into the iron keel and by the looks of it, a stainless compression post to replace whatever was there before (often an aluminium one or galvanised steel post). Look up compression posts for deck-stepped masts to see the details.

Hi from Juneau, Alaska. Just found your posts on this lovely old Prout. Must say she's coming along nicely. I would be very interested to know where your brother-in-law sourced the replacement windows. I have a 1985 Prout Quest 33 down in Plymouth UK, and am having some window issues and replacement might be the solution. I hope you are able to keep posting updates on the Cat, sorry not a powerboater!

Hi sir sorry for being late commenting , but better late than never . My personal view is your boat is ideal for a couple , and no more . Also at this size you are basically buying a floating small caravan , which again small caravans are ideal for two people who don’t have any issues regarding privacy . I would have thought you should get at least what you paid for it , because of the work you have done . And it will have a niche appeal , which might be more than you think . Especially if (no offence meant ), it was to go to a more accessible marina . Us old folks are not as nimble as we used to be , walking long distances to get to a boat are often a challenge . More so than the access to the onboard loo . Best wishes and kind regards , and hope you find your new treasure . 👍

Looking at the brokerage sales prices, I think I may nudge a bit more than I paid for it, but my boat is pretty much next to the car park (if you look back at some of my early videos you'll see how far I had to walk to get to it). I think I'll have my boat for at least another year though.

Thanks for the vids. I'm considering buying an Antares 7.8 with 150hp. Just wondering what ideal cruising speed is and what the fuel consumption is?
@TheBoatVirgin3 ай бұрын
Hi Matt, I personally have never worked out the fuel consumption, but I can honestly say, that I have never feel my wallet pinched by the fuel costs. On the ideal cruising speed, it depends on the conditions. If it is a moderate swell, 15 knots is great, but on a flat sea, 25 knots is perfect.
@mattgough63443 ай бұрын
@@TheBoatVirgin thanks. How does it handle a bit of chop? I wouldn’t be going out in very rough seas, but live near Plymouth, where we do usually have some chop once out. Does the hull bang much? I have a two year old and just trying to suss whether I’d be ok cruising at ~23kts, or wind up going much slower to have comfort when there is a bit of wind swell.
@TheBoatVirgin3 ай бұрын
@@mattgough6344 when there is a fair bit of chop, it can slap a bit, but bringing it back to displacement speeds is OK, but because the hull is pretty much flat, it rolls a lot. So intend to just about get it on the plane and then is it OK. With a 2 year, when it is flat to a small swell you will be fine.

Hi. if parts seem okay it would suggest that the mixing has been the issue , probably next time if you use an electric drill with a small paddle it might give you better results . But at least your use of tape worked better than I expected , but I wouldn’t beat yourself up about it . There’s plenty of people on KZbin who are doing resin all the time , and still have major failures with resin . 😊

Ferro boat construction was quite popular in Australia back in the day. You could get a lot of boat for your money if you were willing to put in the work. The downside was that they tended to break up easily if grounded. For some reason they fell out of fashion and were overtaken by steel plate boats as a building medium preferred by backyard builders.

I'd never seen one before this build by a friend, and the state of the hull from the photos, you can see how rough it was. @Kx110x6 ай бұрын
Hi sir great idea , as regards the bolt heads could you countersink them below the surface and fill and paint the area . You will presumably be able to fix the post holder from the bottom , so that should be no problem . As for the tape idea to hold back the resin , I’m not sure that would be strong enough . So if you could make some sort of additional support , this would give you a better of a level consistent surface . And prevent a major resin leak , and waste material which can be quite expensive . Hope you don’t mind my suggestions , kind regards as always 👍
@TheBoatVirgin6 ай бұрын
Thank you for the suggestions. I did countersink the bolt head, but I didn't think to paint them. I have since poured the resin and tape seems to have done the job and I will do an update on what it looks like. For the first 48 hours after pouring it looked great, but there are a few issues with it which you will see in the next video. Thank you for supporting the channel and watching the videos.

@@TheBoatVirgin hi sir glad all’s well , as for doing the project in the first place I take my hat off to you . Having watched numerous resin pores on KZbin and seeing how things can go disastrously wrong , I don’t think you should worry too much about your results .
