I can tell this guy is legit when he brought up the "stand on one foot" test.

My first and most important gear are poles. More than food, boots or pack. I can hike in flip flops, go all day with no food, but POLES are number one! Only water has equal importance. GREAT information, Chase, thank you!! 🙏🏼

I mean, those northface jackets you’re referring too aren’t alpine jackets… they have the summit series for people who need those features.

Also prepare for your shoulders and arms to be sore and achy. After Day 1 I felt like I had finished a shoulder and arm day at the gym. First hike with them actually felt extra strenuous. The newly engaged muscles need some time to adapt.

Hope Olive is still going strong! I can imagine you fell in love with this van and like how you described the mountaincabin-feel she has. Id say that should definately not be underestimated. Last weekend I realised I can build a bed in my tiny hatchback, so I now call it my micro-campervan, lol. Totally forgot it also needs a name now, though. Cashew? Pumpkin? Hmmmmz...

The link to the tarp is from the solo version, but this this the duo, am I right? It seems like a great tarp! I love that you can choose to only take the tarp or the mesh. And that the tarp has 2 doors :)

I was born with flat feet now I'm in my 60s. Every single brand and pair of shoes I bought with a arch support made my feet worse all these years. I spent so much money on useless arch support shoes I just bought a pair of these can I have high hopes when you have flat feet and you wear shoes with art supports that's the worst thing that can happen to your feet I was told by a podiatrist. So he's the one that told me to try these type of shoes I just started a week ago.

4 million bucks to a company like Vibram is nothing. They probably made that back with the notoriety the court case provided. 4 million is what they spend on lobby art.

I appreciate this video. My takeaway is this... Our bodies are great at adapting to any situation and when we change what we are wearing, eating etc. our bodies will go through a period where things may not feel the best and we question our choice to make that change. Therefore, transitioning is important and also listening to your body and be aware of the feedback it is giving you. Just because wearing these types of shoes is probably the best way to move around besides going barefoot, it doesn't mean they should be held to a higher standard. We all need to take responsibility for our choices and be wise about why we make those choices. It's like eating poison and blaming the manufacturer of the poison when you get sick. (ie fast food).

Let's stop for a moment to remember the unlikely 70s hero who made of walking barefoot his trademark: Kwai Chang Caine. Up to the point that David Carradine's gravestone names him The Barefoot Legend.

Summary: Bring socks, a trowel and a water filter if necessary. I don't trust smartphones on a hike and don't bring one. When hiking in Australia or New Zealand we need water filters. The water is infested there. In my part of the world we have clean water and don't need a filter. Bring a filter only if it's necessary. The real list of 5 most important bits of hiking gear is: 1. Footwear you are comfortable with and have used before 2. A compass 3. Paper maps 4. A trowel 5. A survival shelter If you want a GPS as a back up, bring a dedicated one and not a smartphone. It will only use batteries when it's powered on.

As an ex- ballet dancer, high heeled shoe wearer that has suffered from great toe arthritis/stiffness for many years now, I can tell you that barefoot shoes have given me a new lease on life. I started running on the treadmill barefoot a few years ago because running shoes caused pain. About a year ago I bought minimalist shoes and I haven’t looked back. It’s all I wear. For people who are looking for a quick fix, wake up and grow a pair. There are no quick fixes in life. We are all different. There is no easy answer. Use your critical thinking skills and consult a professional if you can’t figure it out for yourself. I’m pretty damn tired of the victimist, litigist attitudes so prevalent these days. It’s your life, take some damn responsibility.

The first time you did the BOLT test in a vid I did it and definitely gave myself a higher score, so this time I actually tapped out when my brain first suggested breathing, so got 22. But then I did the maximum breathlessness test and got 62 so I guess I tapped out too soon. I still breathe heavy when running or going uphill though and am not unfit :-/

Mallory was a schoolteacher. I think they should institute certain skill levels before you can climb the mountain. The main problem is money. People paying alot who have no experience and then the dudes and dudettes that have the experience fitness or stamina can't afford it.

Hey Chase! Great presentation 😊👌🏼 I've been following you for some time, mostly doing your follow-along, minimal training videos here on KZbin. They've been included in my morning routine - helping me be persistent with my knee rehab (had a partially ruptured meniscus two years ago) and I feel like they've had a great impact on my life in general. I'm obsessed with rock climbing/bouldering since a couple of years back, and I feel like I owe you a big thank you for keeping me fit enough to maintain and excell at my sport in my early 30's. Cheers from Sweden!

I'm a barefoot farrier (I trim horse hooves) when a horse is running you want a heel first landing because as the heels slam into the ground, the digital cushion absorbes the shock, and the hoof rolls forward off the toe. The sole, bars, frog, and hoof wall work in unison. Both tendons in the leg are working like a pulley system. One is tightening as the hoof extends, whilst the other is releasing. With a toe first landing, both tendons tighten at the same time - not good. When horses deliberately run around on their toes, its because there are a few reasons that can happen. Pain at the back of the foot needs addressed. When they land toe first all that weight slams down into the navicular bone. If nothing is done, the deep flexor tendon can be severed, which supplies 90% of bloodflow to the hooves. (Big deal for heel first landing) They sell easy boots, cavallo, etc, for horses to ride over rough terrain so they can land properly. They aren't built up to rocky roads, miles upon miles, etc, because when pens aren't cleaned out frequently, manure builds up. This causes pathogens to weaken the frog/ etc, and its also VERY soft material they walk over. (They are pooping out plant material so its soft or even just a mud hole if it rains) The way we house horses doesn't mimic nature at ALL. Wild horses have incredible, strong, rock crunching hooves! Domestic horses are kept in stalls (next to no movement) dry lots (better but still not great) or pasture (even better). They have hay and water close together so the structure of the hoof is weak because they dont have to work (or walk a lot) for anything. Wild horses travel 25 miles per day!! Domestic horses don't come close to that. (I have a point here) I say all that to say that horses have injuries with steel shoes nailed on the bottom all the time. Its a proven fact that when they are barefoot the blood flow in the hoof capsule is substantially higher! A lot of farriers combat this imbalance by leaving the heels longer in an unnatural position. JUST LIKE A WEDGED SHOE ON A HUMAN to compensate for the weak structure. Barefoot boots on horses improves the structure of the hoof. I find this all so interesting as a hoof nerd and now a woman walking in barefoot shoes having an 'ah ha' moment. Like wow, why was I cramming my foot in a narrow shoe with cushion and a higher heel, which puts me more on my toes? Its the exact opposite that I do for the horses I trim 😂 tonight I went on a 3 hour hike with my dogs. My legs are so tired and sore from using underworked muscles! Point made. I'm going to keep working at it. To any equine owners, look into paddock paradise to improve their living situation to minic nature and increase movement. -horse nerd out

Great presentation - I had head and neck cancer treatment, part of that healing process is learning to breathe again (eat and talk) but radiation fibroids internally make for really difficult breathing when training, so this was invaluable - thank you. I don't have a question yet but I have downloaded the OA app and my Bolt is around 20 - I was thinking my issue was radiated fibroids but it might be gasping in air like I lost a lung - thanks again this was really good information and as a yoga person it makes perfect sense.

I came here looking for information on what transition to barefoot shoes looks like and I appreciate the "run for 20 seconds" suggestion. Everyone just says "take it easy" but that it a totally relative comment. I agree that there needs to be more information and education for people who want to make this transition.
