Compared to One Piece openings, 1min and 40 sec indeed seems short lol I love the animation style of Science Saru (the studio doing Dandadan), but if I had to vote I'd choose Blue Box. At 9:58 Lakan was told Fenxian is gone now. He thought his affair with her had lowered her price so someone else had bought her, or maybe ruined her reputation so nobody would buy her and the madame had thrown her out. He had many scenarios he could imagine to account for her being lost to him, but no real reason to think she might still be there. It just wouldn't make sense for the house to keep her there if she wasn't earning them money and costing them money to feed and house. I think the reason he comes across as such a bad guy is that he always felt like a bad guy. He felt responsible for whatever dreadful fate he imagined had befallen her and wanted to be punished. His odd hints about lowering the value of a courtesan might make you think he had raped her or something like that, but that's probably just his guilty conscience wishing to confess his misplaced guilt over something he couldn't have controlled. It's a tragic tale and the only "bad guys" in it are the ones who hid the truth all those years. He was sent away against his will and by the time he was allowed to return there was nothing he could have done because he was told she wasn't even within his reach anymore. Perhaps he would have purchased her right there on the doorstep but he wasn't given a chance. Her letters had been waiting for him at his local address so he couldn't have seen them until he returned home. The only chance for either of them to be happy was taken away by the madame who lied and told him she was gone. It's such a sad tale. Heartbreaking when you see how much he's loved her all these years.
