It is hard to believe that a 1 billion $ cost platform does not have protective mechanism..... for example to make a simple safety net or cover In a drill hole, 1 meter below the surface, which works only when no drill is placed in the drill hole , so that such small things do not fall down...

that poor guy's whole life flashed before his eyes. looked like he was fending off a panic attack, even, with the way he curled up in the corner. i know this is an ancient video, but i hope he's okay wherever he is now. we've all had moments like this where we screw up astronomically & can't even think straight in fear of the retribution sure to follow

Probably the "Owner's" fault for not replacing worn out, bent and damaged gear.

Seems like they need a $3 million dollar piece of string or some sort of failsafe to prevent it escaping into the whole, perhaps something like the doors found on jumbo jets

He lost one quarter of the foot clamps down hole . Depending on total depth , the entire crew are looking at looking at an extended rod pull out of hole . Didnt help that the cables holding the foot clamps together were compromised .

I didn't find the answer but my guess is that they cannot drill anylonger because that piece of metal that fell into the hole is too hard and they cannot continue drilling because will broke the drill

As per the rigs construction, shortly below that bit there should be a valve/door, easy to close and easy to open. Pull the lever, it closes, then pull the bit out, because this simple error costs a lot of money to fix. Youd figure someone would make a failsafe to prevent potentially losing an entire drilled hole from a simple oops

Reading the comments it seems like it’s just an extremely shitty design which lets this sort of thing happen so easily. Not really the deckworker’s fault at all.

You would think if it's that easy to mess the entire job up and cost the company thousands that they would have a better system in place there to prevent that from happening. Just sayin.

Tie a string to every piece so if it falls it catches it. Or because you took my advice literally, the gimpy little string you used snaps and the thing falls down anyways. Also, if you make something cylinder shaped that fits down that hole well enough, especially with wheels on the sides. You should just attach a magnet to the front of it, and lower it down with a cable or rope. Rope may be easily strong enough as long as it’s tied well. Rope snaps? Do it again with something stronger. Rock Climbers rope should work well since it can support the weight of a person easily and clearly the part doesn’t weigh more then they do.

Take note activist folks.. its that easy to shut down a drill op. Toss a wrench in the hole and it costs millions IF they can get it out. If not capped and directional drill from another place. All that costs MILLIONS.

Reminds me of a story I read about the roughneck that accidentally dropped a hammer into the hole, the fishing crew came out and spent two days retrieving the hammer. Afterwards, the foreman walked up to the roughneck, handed him his hammer and said "you are fired". The roughneck said "well I guess I won't need this anymore" and tossed the hammer back into the hole.

This remember me a few years ago working in a small maintenance company, with a new Siemens automaton and someone connect the polarity inverted, the 600€ automaton was destroyed. A simple cheap diode would avoid this.
