Flying Turkey won the calypso crown in his first threeyears of competition. He was crowned calypso monarch of Grenada in 1976, 1977 and 1978. He captured a fourth crown in 1984! He was inspired by The Mighty Chalkdust from Trinidad and Tobago and King Shortshirt from Antigua and Barbuda. One of Flying Turkey’s many contributions to Grenada’s cultureincludes; launching the “We Calypso Tent” in 1977. And coming out of the 1970’s-Flying Turkey pioneered the transformation in the writing style and tempo in the calypso art form in Grenada. That transformation in writing resulted in amore ‘modern’ style of calypso and strong up-tempo songs in calypso competitions. Flying Turkey gave us calypso classics such as “King in Hell’, “Black Child,“Freedom”, “Grenada Belongs to We”, “The denture”, and the all-time classic “Byron”. Flying Turkey must also be credited with branding Grenada’s carnival as “Spicemas”.
