I absolutely did not consider this, this explains why Mike kept his feelings bottled up. I didn't realize how selfish and manipulative he was. The whole reason he blows up at Lucy despite her trying and succeeding to calm herself is because Mike needed a replacement for her. He also does confirm this trait in Eternal Flame where he apologizes to Lucy but it's more driven by the fact that he needs rebound. I don't think Mike is a bad person though, I think a part of him was so racked by guilt that he felt Sandy coming to visit was his personal justification to let Lucy have it, he kept this bottled because he only wanted a positive relationship with Lucy if Sandy wasn't around. So I guess it's a mix of him being selfish for love as well as also trying to condemn Lucy. It's a good thing Mike is reminded of her positive qualities and comes to regret it, despite his mistake. This explains a lot about why Mike chose to put Lucy down despite her trying to improve. He needed a justification to hate her and that would be Sandy coming to visit, which would mean that if they work out he would have no reason to consider being with Lucy.

I have considered the idea that Mike only kept Lucy around because she was readily available and he did like her, and the moment Sandy became an option again he then tried to get away from her, but the issue with that is two things. 1. Mike was still more than willing to be Lucy's friend, up until she confessed her love to him. 2. Sandy was always in the background bellyaching about how Lucy treats him, and Mike takes WAY too much stock in what she says. We see their phone calls over the years in December. I think the more likely scenario is that Mike wanted to avoid Lucy because he had feelings for her, and when she confessed her love to him, it would make it all the more difficult for him to resist wanting to be with her. He is too wrapped up in wanting to be with Sandy, maybe for ego reasons, maybe for the sake of not wanting to hurt someone he cares about or just being stubborn and wanting this relationship to work. It could also be mixed with fears that Lucy would just go back to being abusive toward him. Whatever the case his, for him, the best way to not fall into that temptation is to remove it from the picture - not a good way to handle this, but he's just 15 at that point. He also doesn't want to be branded as a cheater, something he had to deal with from Paulo for several chapters. Mike starts to get comfortable around Lucy again - something her does feel guilty about, but I don't think it's because he feels like he's using her. He probably feels guilty because he knows he's being a jerk and it's wrong, but he doesn't know what else to do. Then Sandy texts him, and his sleep agent activates and he goes aggro on her. The idea, I think, is not that Mike is toxic (though he is being so at that moment), but Sandy is toxic for him, and turns him into someone he's not. And Lucy was the same way, outside of the abusing Mike for years, she also rebounds on Paulo because HE'S readily available and she knows he likes her. Obviously Paulo can see through this and ultimately rejects her, but the Yin and Yang for Lucy and Mike is that they use others to try and deny their feelings for each other, because both have hurt the other and are scared it will be a repeated behavior in a relationship, when in reality the relationship is what would fix this issue.
@sachinraghavan4556
@sachinraghavan4556 9 ай бұрын
I do agree with this, both Lucy and more recently Mike have tempers and frustrations that they can't control but they both effectively rely on each other for comfort. They know that they can and that they would understand each other, that is obviously until Sandy calls out Lucy's temper and Mike starts avoiding her for it and of course lashing out. Lucy massively improves her temper (though not completely) while Mike flips, turning from kind to a rageful bully. They both have the potential to be nice to each other and hopefully one day they will and become Yin and Yang again. I do agree with this analysis, it explains a lot about why Mike specifically lashes out when Lucy tries to improve herself. Mike wants to hate Lucy, he doesn't want to go through her rage again, but needs confirmation that he and Sandy will work in order to assure this. When that happens he tries to discard Lucy, only seeing the negative side of her, and only too late when she's hospitalized does he acknowledge the fact that she has helped and cared about him many times, causing him to break down in regret.

I was an academic librarian for over two decades, and you'd be amazed how few instructors ever gave this sort of background and context to their term paper assignments. The idea, of course, was to have them emulate the lit review section of an academic paper, but I'd estimate that approximately zero instructors ever told them that. So whenever I addressed a class, I'd try to hit the exact points you're hitting. Because, as far as I could tell, no one was telling them this stuff!

Well, you describe the difference between the two but it doesn't solve the premise of "changing your identity regardless of how you are born". Additionally, although all fetuses begin as female, most melanin production for instance doesn't begin until after 9 weeks and most after birth. So are you comfortable saying all humans start as white? I agree that this is complicated and I'm honestly not sure how to take a position aside from support all peoples identities unless they harm others.

Race is more than just melanin - every person from a certain race has certain features that apply to them (e.g. hair type, nose shape, eye shape, etc...). An albino black man is not a white man due to his lack of melanin; he is still black due to the facial features that are associated with his race. In addition, melanin can be seen in hair color, and I can assure that there are many non-white people with fair hair. Their lack of melanin does not exempt them from being a person of color or a non-white person. To be white is not to have white skin or fair hair or a lack of melanin (its name should not be taken literally), it's to have features that match up with the "white" race. It's quite complicated to try and detangle this, but the way I like to think about transracialism is that it's not comparable to transgenderism. The people making the argument that "transracial = transgender" most of the time are finding ways to be transphobic. Just because both race and gender are social constructs, does not mean that they are the same. Race has many factors and causes many experiences; black women, for example, grow up as black women and live their lives as black women, it's part of their identity and they experience their lives through that lens. Transracial people do not have those lived experiences. However, a transgender person from childhood is growing up with that maleness or femaleness because of the way that gender identity operates inside us regardless of what our bodies look like and how people treat us based on that. There is a degree of femaleness or maleness inside every person, however on the other hand, there is no degree of blackness in every person on earth. In terms of the point that David made in his video, I think it's a brilliant rebuttal to the argument. This question is really tough and some of the arguments people try to make are incorrect and give transphobes a reason to use it as evidence to justify their bigotry. Identify as who you want to be, as long as it doesn't harm others, sure, but I personally think that transracial people are doing some kind of harm. They are taking away from the struggles that both people of color and transgender people have to go through by suggesting that one can "choose" their race, and therefore by that logic you are also "choosing" your gender. If it were that simple, as a person of color, I would just "become" white to remove the struggles I have to go through due to my lack of whiteness. It doesn't really work that way. Your question is really good though, it made me think for quite a while. I hope this makes sense - it's quite hard to translate my thoughts into words especially when it's such a complicated topic.

@@nadine9018 Not all black people have lived the black experience honestly. I for one grew up in Africa but trust me I do not conform with the way of living here from my accenting to the way I dress, down to my music choice. If I am to probe or self- identity I'd say I struggled with racial dysphoria. I absolutely wanted nothing to do with this identity, I went out of my way to conform less. Are my feelings invalidated?
@sheldon910

@@nadine9018 You can say the same for men who don’t understand the female struggle. Surely it’s understood that in this day n age women have more human rights violations across the globe then men do. So in a sense, can’t you argue the same thing that you’d argue about black people? A trans man will never go through a menstrual cycle nor be able to go through the horrible pain of labor or even the 9 months of pregnancy. Most, if not ALL arguments made for transgender people can be made for transracial. At the end of it, the main point is that they do not feel as if they are born with the appropriate identity. Regardless of anatomy in ANY form. To cherry pick gender and race is dishonest and discriminatory. Also u argued that race is more than just skin color which I agree with. I also believe that sex is more than just men having nipples. ( example used by him in video). That entire argument feels flimsy n doesn’t hold much weight in my mind.

The reason he's writing about bureaucracy is because the book is an attempt at satire. There are many attempts throughout the book but many of them fall flat. So I could see why you would think he's just interested in bureaucracy as opposed to attempting to satirize it, he does not do a good job. He also does this in battlefield earth, when the one aliens are sitting around drinking tea talking about planets going into foreclosure.

This reminded me of something I've heard recently. One girl told a story about how she went to some kind of buddhist village where you're not allowed to use any devices or talk to anyone for ten days, so you spend most of the time just meditating. It's supposed to help you clear your mind. And another guy responded: "That sounds well and good, but now you're back in civilization with all its noise, problems, annoying people, and other stimuli. Have you learned how to handle all that?". Food for thought...

I have an idea for a topic that would be right in your field of expertise: mental health and philosophy. I have this admittedly naive stereotype that one simply MUST have some "issues" in order to ponder all these difficult questions about life the way philosophers do. Would a mentally stable person need to think about free will, meaning of life, morality of suicide, and other abstract matters in such detail? Could philosophy be an attempt of a desperate mind to create more structure in life? Thank you.

I hated Jettero Heller- I kept hoping Soltan Gris would kill him. You have to suspend logic many times in like how Jettero Heller slipped out of so many traps. All the characters were written, it would seem, with 5 year old mentalities (or written for 5 year olds to enjoy). You find out quickly that LRH hated psychoanalysis and psychoanalysts.... he seems obsessed with sexual perversion (this is more a low grade pornography work than sci fi).... the names of people and institutions were outright silly (like a news paper called the New York Grimes, and a law firm called Fatten. Farten, Bursten and Ooze). The only character I liked was Lombar Hisst. I couldn’t stand anybody else. And Jettero Heller especially. I couldn’t stand him.
