Staggers me how boards want to move on coaches who have basically coached a Dynasty. They think they’re rejuvenating the club for a new tilt of more of the same but are then rubbish for the following decades. Think Chicago Bulls getting rid of Phil Jackson & Jordan, North getting rid of Pagan. Both clubs garbage since. It’s often the ego of those in charge that’s responsible for the change and the need to exert authority and influence over what is a dominant figure of the club.

Also with Neale Daniher, I hope he is doing well as what I have heard he has been through some tough times over recent years. He was a great player and never got to have a long term career as a player. All the best to Neale

I was there that day as a teenager and I did go to the last round match Essendon v Carlton also. But was more enthusiastic about this final as Essendon had the wood over Carlton over the last 3 years beforehand. Essendon played some great football during the finals but got the nerves in the GF againts Hawthorn which was hard to watch. But Essendon were very unlucky in the early 80's with the final 5 as it was back then. As they finished with 16 wins during the home and away season and still had to play in the Elimination Finals in 1981 & 1982 which has never happened to a team in any other year with the final five system, as 16 wins had always gauranteed a the double chance. Then in 1983 Essendon had won 15 games but yet had to go through the Elimination Final again. Though the team that had finished top of the ladder that year North Melbourne only had 16 wins. Not fair as I shed a few tears thinking about, just kidding lol as been a long time now, but am sure I did back then. But Essendon missed that champion player Neale Daniher as he would have made a difference. He is one of the most unluckiest players to play the game considering he had constant Knee problems and surguries and missed many years of football because of it.

How did the Tigers miss the finals in that season? They were 4th after this game, then won only 3 of the remaining 7 matches to miss out by 3.8% to Essendon.
@anguskerr76659 ай бұрын
As was typical of Richmond back in the late 90s and early 2000s, Just fell slightly short and got unlucky in some matches, lost to West Coast, Essendon, Hawthorn and Melbourne. Out of those matches Hawthorn is the team that they should have beaten in the 2nd half of the year given Richmond had a considerably higher ladder position at the the time their match was played, 5th vs 16th in Round 18 1998. Still finished on the same amount of wins for the year as both 7th and 8th on the ladder West Coast and Essendon. After 3 Premierships in 4 years all of those missed opportunities seem irrelevant now.
@sentimentalbloke1859 ай бұрын
@@anguskerr7665 Tigers have to guard against returning to that level of mediocrity & should be aiming to play finals most years. Back in the day there were many seasons like '98 where they should've played off but missed out.

@@sentimentalbloke185 Good point, would want to avoid the dreaded finished 9th again curse like what occurred in 94,96,98,2000,2006 and 2008 moving forward. Hopefully Adam Yze leads the club in the right direction.
@sentimentalbloke1859 ай бұрын
@@anguskerr7665 Yze's the right choice. I reckon he'll sort through the list as the season progresses & there will be a fair turnover of the list at season's end. But they should still be aiming for finals.

This guy should be a politician the way he dodges questions and refuses to answer. “At the end of the day” “We did what the club asked us to do” “There’s no point in discussing it now”. Pathetic. If you won’t answer questions, don’t come on the show

Collingwood during Tom Hafey’s time went 0-4-1 in the Grand Final. The Pies boot four final quarter goals to only lose by less than a goal to give the Blues their fourth flag in a dozen years (1968, 1970, 1972, 1979). Two years before, the Pies had a 27 point lead over North Melbourne and despite the Kangaroos booting 11 points in 43 minutes of play, they booted five goals in the final quarter to draw the game at 76 points apiece (COLL 10.16.76 to NM 9.22.76).
