@neilblinco121315 күн бұрын
Limited demand from time poor travelers who would choose the shorter journeys rather than the day trip was the main reason - not enough return to justify the costs of maintenance over the length of the line. Nature would soon take over.

I spent alot of time in my teenage years volunteering at the GVR. I moved away in the 80s. Was there for the station opening and again for the 40th anniversary. The Christmas lights events are spectacular and it's great to see the Railway prosper.

Thank you for making this video! You just saved me many $$$ in fees to get it looked at, because here i was hitting the dang thing sideways until it clicked to get the key out scared of doing more damage! I have cleaned and re-lubricated the silver tab, however it still isnt engaging 100% of the time. I am yet to take off the other plastics around centre console to further inspect; however I know know its just a small tab contact and not the shifter mechanism! THANKYOU

Wow,hasn't perth grown up since then, the next building to get demolished is carillon city,this year,it runs from murray st mall to hay street mall and it was 4 floors high. Now its going to be modern and ugly.like the picadilly arcade,that's now has a tiny walking area,but the shops are twice as big. The art deco was brilliant before,now its dark and dinghy. No atmosphere at all now.

The first scene is of ex Queensland Railways suburban passenger carriages. The were air braked as opposed the Westrail’s other narrow gauge rolling stock. The locomotive was a X class diesel. As best I can remember this video is prior the the Perth electrification. Really exciting time to be living in Perth.

Hi Neil. I'm curious to ask, how were your turntables operated considering the older rollingstock were vacuum brakes? I know westinghouse, but not really seen or understood your brake system. Cheers Adrian.
@neilblinco12136 ай бұрын
Adrian most of the WAGR turntables were balance tables with only the more modern tables being electrically powered or converted to electric. Vacuum powered turntables seem to have been a thing in the UK but to my knowledge we had none. Vacuum brake equipment is still in use on all heritage equipment (as originally fitted) in operation in WA today except where air was fitted on more modern diesels. Vacuum Brake was simple to achieve with steam locomotives, it requiring minimal machinery and moving parts etc as well as being a fail safe system. This is a good description of how Vacuum brakes work - kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaK5Yn2BqrB0mrssi=ttiO0a73zfzHplEU
@adriannettlefold90846 ай бұрын
@@neilblinco1213 so basically your turntables were hand cranked or pushed around, before they were fitted with electric motors. The poor beggars, had to work for their money then. I had the pleasure of operating ones fitted with and without air motors. Thanks for the explanation.
@neilblinco12136 ай бұрын
@@adriannettlefold9084 As far as I know we had none hand cranked - all were balance tables - even the biggest of locomotives could be spun easily if balanced correctly so yes Pushed to start and then it was likely relative to how much vegetation had grown in the pit encroaching on the underside girder space as to how much pushing was required

That how an engine should be worked. The blokes working her had her set right, little smoke, sweet exhaust cut off. I have always admired the WA V and W Classes. If only Queensland had of done likewise. Our BB18 1/4 engines were good to drive, but never sounded as nice as that, neither could they or the much old C19 class ever pull as much. Our Garratt was capable of 1300ton but never ever hauled that much in service. Thanks for sharing. I'm enjoying my WA holiday and hope to visit Hotham Valley and Pinjarra before I head home. Cheers.

That is an absolutley massive firebox on that engine, all that distance behind the last driver back to the single trailing axle (which seems to have rather small wheels). I would have guessed there would be a risk of a quite rocky ride, but it seems to be smouth enough. Was this a successful type in it's day?
@neilblinco12136 ай бұрын
Very successful. The most modern steam locomotive on the WAGR and very capable. The rear trailing wheelset is same size as the front, it is just hidden by the bogie firebox arrangement. It has 40 sq ft of fire grate designed to efficiently burn the lower grade WA coal from Collie. It is said they rode a little rough around 70kph but otherwise smooth enough below or above that.

Interesting video. The AA loco is an A class but with dual air/vacuum brake. The A only had vacuum for the train brake. Also, my understanding is that the mill shunt loco had a Rolls Royce diesel engine. I remember this area well I was a train guard at Manjimup from 1976-85.

The X not looking good. They always were a smoky beast. And the drivers of the F would have to manage the sand well. Otherwise he would run low on air. The Fs worked well in multiple unit but struggled in the wet as single unit.
