The original games were the best. To me the precision jumping that could easily be measured and the acrobatic fighting was what made the game. The survivor series removed all that (and the tombs) and turned it into a totally bland adventure game

Im still in love with Cossacks 2. I hope they will do a remake one day.

First Cossacks games were dumb and simple - ranged unit couldn't melee and started running across the battlefield to get away. Also did zero damage and game was winned by those who built heavy melee units which were virtually invincible. Building walls and fortifications was interesting but the AI was not capable of building it and they were useless anyway as units could shoot through. Cossacks 2 were the best games together with American Conquest games. Offered much more realism, balance and better AI. Forming units into formations became vital, both units and formations obtained experience during the fight. All units could melee. With researching bayonets, riflemen could easily win against cavalry with use of square formation. Soldiers had morale system which was another important step. Single cavalry charge to enemys back did not kill the whole formation but caused panic in the ranks so soldeirs started running away from the enemy and you couldn't do anything with it. Morale was improved with technology, battle experience and drummer, officer and flag bearer being alive within the formation. The more friendlies died or scattered within close vicinity of the unit, the more its morale dropped. Killing enemies and watching enemies run had the opposite effect. Cossacks 2 system of capturing villages that were sending convoys with resources was superb. No more dumb "spam workers to mine resources" StarCraft/every basic RTS system. You captured village and people were sending convoys with resources. So they did to the enemy, so you could block a road and kill/capture the convoys to weaken the enemys economy without a direct fight. American Conquest brought interesting concept of asymmetric warfare between Europeans and Native Americans. Slow clumsy but well trained and disciplined European units vs fast moving light hordes of natives that relied upon hit-and-run tactics and moment of surprise. American Conquest: Divided Nations was another step in realism and small details, horse carriages with cannons and barricades were introduced. You could actually build very nice towns and cities in Cossacks 2 and American Conquest. The map and scenario editor was very user friendly and the 2D graphics were realistic, cute and heart warming. I hoped their next RTS game will be in Cossacks 2+American Conquest spirit but no.. GSC fucked it up with Cossacks 3 which returned back to first Cossacks games dumb system instead of continuing with Cossacks 2+American Conquest realism system.
