l love your video and would love to attend your workshops but live in Bristol. l am considering repairing the bottom panel of my back garage timber door which has splintered and now is allowing water in, have watched many KZbin videos and yours was the only one that showed you applying your resin to a board on its incline most KZbin videos are repairs on a flat board or timber, as l don't what to take off my back door to resin the panel can you help me?

What is de lay-up of the canoe mold. It looks a fiberglass mold but how many layers of fiberglass do I need to make a stiff 'split mold" for a racing canoe of 18ft6"?

Hi do you have any recommendations on what to use to air seal a split mould that's being vacuum infused? Having trouble getting the split fully sealed and not sucking in air.
@epoxycraftnewsletter
@epoxycraftnewsletter Жыл бұрын
Hi Jerica, it's possible to create a rebate in the mould return flange during the mould making process enough to facilitate a silicone chord that will affect a good seal. A thick skin coat or gelcoat can seal any potential entry of air. Cheap silicone sealant can be used. The tooling can be placed in an envelope vac bag. Bag tape can be used, it's imperative to ensure a good seal. Any atmospheric air entering the part will distribute globally through the composite. Hope this helps.

Further fine-tuning the process would include closing a valve between the pump and the vacuum-reservoir, then keeping an eye on a vacuum-gauge meter (on the reservoir, to check for leaks. And masking the edge of the mold before applying mold release wax. The gum tape may not stick to good on the wax, you know. And produce a video without the elevator music, which does not serve any purpose. Just my 2 cents!

Thanks David Johnson. I was really nervous about doing this and you have made me confident. Questions: 1) If this hole was going to be underwater, would the process be the same. 2) If I planned to prime with a two part barrier coat primer, would you still do the last step? 3) If one has access to the inside of the hull, would you put a permanent backing plate or wedge a temporary backing plate in place?

What is the cure time for this epoxy?
@epoxycraftnewsletter
@epoxycraftnewsletter 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ralph, WEST SYSTEM 105 Epoxy has 4 hardeners available. Offering different cure speeds. Details can be found here wessexresins.co.uk/west-system/find-the-right-product/hardener-filler-and-additive-selection-guides/ In this video, we used WEST SYSTEM 205 Fast Hardener which provides a pot life of 10-15min, a working time in thin film of 60-70min and a cure to solid state in thin film of 5-7 hours.

Surprised they didn't do a drop test. That would have told them if there was a leak or not instead of listening for leaks.

People have been using this process for many years in other industries and hobbies, and called it vacuum bagging. Boat builders wanted to sound very high-tech and decided to call it "INFUSION". I will steam infuse a piece of wood so that it will be easy to bend without breaking. Peons call it steam bending.

infusion is the process of infusing resin into the dry fiberglass strands UsInG the process of vacuum bagging, it’s a more specific term than just “vacuum bagging” we don’t call up our supply store and ask for “vacuum bagging resin” lol any resin can be used for vacuum bagging, PRO-SET infusion resin is specifically made for infusions because it is a lower viscosity resin which makes it easier for the resin to flow through the hoses and evenly spread the resin at a convenient rate ensuring that every single millimeter of fiberglass is saturated in resin which in turn creates more structural integrity when it cures because of the added pressure and even distribution of resin.

Great demonstration! What product is the release film/flow media combo? I like how you discuss cutting it back and how you had to revise that detail as you made several canoes. Is the heat-able mold made with a specific core product? I'd love to learn more about that too and how the mold was made!

Was this fabric you used fiberglass or carbon fiber? I assume not fiberglass. If carbon fiber, what type of carbon fiber mesh did you use?
@jamaldarius7291
@jamaldarius7291 3 жыл бұрын
it was fiberglass, they said they used bi-axial cloth which is makes sense since they didn’t spray any gelcoat in the mold, bi-axial cloth is a lot smoother finish than something like 1708 or matte, also saturates a lot easier and makes for a even layer resin within the glass when cured

Thank you. The Water channel heat cure in the mold was a surprising piece in the video. Thanks for being real and cluing us in when things are difficult to process. I have found fabric and materials cutting and placement the most tedious and exacting part of the whole process. Most videos skip that part or fail to mention what a pain Material handling can be.

@epoxycraftnewsletter

Hi Farmer Thank you for your comment. Whether coating, bonding, fairing or applying fabrics, the success of the application depends not only on the strength of the epoxy, but also on how well the epoxy adheres to the surface to which it is applied. It is advantageous to apply the epoxy direct to the substrate once previous coating have been removed and the appropriate surface preparation has been completed. Timber surfaces should be clean, dry and thoroughly abraded. Further details can be found in our free WEST SYSTEM User Manual and Product Catalogue. WSI Technical Team
