You failed to mention that one decent welder will cost you the same or more per hour as two guys hired to drive and buck rivets. Where I’m from it’s that way at least

You dont see any riveted boats up hells canyon on class 4 and 5 rapids. Theres a reason for that. Lewiston Idaho/Clarkston Washington is the jet boat capital of the world.

The problem in comparing the two modes of construction is that of build quality and design. Crappy boats have been built using either technique which will then firmly put people in one camp, or another, depending on their personal negative experience. Done properly there is likely little real world difference between the two methods, although personally on smaller boats using thin aluminum, I prefer rivets, just because welding thin materials produces a real chance of compromising the base material and it cracking.

I owned a welded Crestliner and a 12” seam split open in the hull. No rough stuff. I checked with the dealer and they called Crestliner and the repair was approved. A local weld shop did the repair and sent the bill to the dealer. We do have a riveted boat as well and no issues with it.

Alot of both , really depends on the quality of the work done by the riviter or welder , weather its monday or friday , quality of mayerial is key to any things man made , but if your builder isnt on top of his or her game then your product suffers .

I don't understand --- the picture at 3:08 shows SigSauer 180 grain FMJ why isn't he using Underwood 200 grain hard cast???? Is this guy really a professional or is he to cheap to buy the goodstuff? The 180 grain @1250 fps is soft lead surrounded by a jacket and will deform the 200 grain hard cast at 1250 fps will penetrate better thru that much bear fat. BUT today there's another great choice it's call the 460 Rowland, that's what I would have for bear hunting follow-up. A step up from the already great 10mm.

Comparing plane and boats is further than apples and oranges... types of stress, vibrations, etc are completely different. Fiberglass boat builder with 40 years experience and also have owned a few smaller aluminum "skiffs" - smaller boats under 18ft for lake use in short interval wind chop = 100% riveted will outperform in most cases ... when you get into larger scale BC/Alaska ocean boats from 20ft-40ft - you will see 100% welded 100% of the time

OK, I’m gonna let you people in on a little secret. Are you ready? The best way and the quickest way to stop a bear is always carry salmon in your pocket if he or she decides to charge you run to your left throw the salmon to your right keep running as fast as you can Until you Can’t run no more Then wait 10 minutes walk back to where you threw the salmon and see if it’s still there if it’s gone, you’re probably next run like hell that bear is Most likely still hungry. Remember These wise words, you’ll thank me later

I have made many of trips to Dog Island with a boat less than ideal when conditions turned bad fast motor literally cavitating heading back with following seas. If you ever surfed in a boat you know. Don't buy a boat and think you're bullet proof. Slick calm sounds a like a whether man not the guy on the boat.

I’ve had almost every boat type you mentioned aside from the 3600hp option lol. Three cats from 25-26. First an Ocean Star 250 CC. Same hull that Hydrosport put that atrocious looking cap on. Excellent riding cat and would plane on one 130. Second was 260 Glacier Bay Canyon Runner. Unbelievable ride, but you would get side to side action in a cross sea due to it being semi displacement, but never would it pound. Biggest issue was speed. Currently have a 26 Twin Vee CC w twin 200 Suzuki’s. Only negative is storage and lack of fish boxes, but it will run 37 loaded and still get 2.3. Back it down to lower 30’s and I can get 2.6 after burning some fuel. Being in South Louisiana we have some very long runs, so the speed and efficiency is huge for me. Maybe one day I’ll be able to afford a 30 to 40’ cat, but the TV does everything I need. Not to mention will run in 2’ of water.

I had a 21' Carolina Skiff for 13+ years, fished it hard. Not fast enough to go too far from the beach because you can't beat bad weather back in. But when I did get caught is some rough weather, the skiff got us back safe, but wet and felt like loose teeth from the pounding ride! I switched to Sportsman bay boats in 2019, the Sportsman and a few other bay boats with the carolina flare are dryer than people may think, I have ran some rough water in my 24' Sportsman, solid ride and very dry. I just purchased a new Sportsman 247 masters with Yamaha 300 a few months ago, the only other boat I considered was a Tideline 235 cat. I opted out on the cat because I do fish alone from time to time and being a trailered boat, that's a lot of boat to deal with launching and loading alone.
@CaptPeterson

@@CaptPeterson - Trailering not the issue, launching and loading a cat solo is something I didn't want to deal with. Even though a cat would be an awesome fishing machine, I would catch myself not going fishing as much because I wouldn't want to deal with that size boat.

It's all about ammo choice, less about caliber. The problem with FMJ is that it still expands somewhat when hitting a fluid barrier such as bear fat. So you already get less penetrative power. The only type of ammo someone should have equipped in their sidearm while hunting big game is heavy grain hard cast. It's actually insane how it transforms a sidearm's big game lethality. I personally carry .45 Super in 255gr Hard Cast when I'm in bear, moose, or mountain lion country. I watched a video recently where a young man in Alaska killed a charging coastal brown sow with about eight shots of just .40S&W in 220gr hard cast out of a Glock20. People in old days would have killed for the gear we have nowadays.

Post weld heat treatment of aluminum is required for optimum strength, planes would be lighter being welded if there was a practical way to build wings, welded and heat treatment without warping etc.

Grounded you lose your electronics, you throw your eprib or using your hand held radio/phone for help. Ungrounded it may blow a hole in the boat bottom and fry your electronics and you sink and float in the water waiting for help... So I am hard pressed to understand why you wouldn't recommend grounding.

@@CaptPeterson Well, for starters, PolarKraft no longer builds boats. Lund is essentially the same boat for 20% higher price. Alumacraft seemed like a lighter weight, less solid version of a Starcraft/Lund. They are all nice boats, they all float and fish, I just think getting a better deal for all the same or better features and quality, and getting to choose your motor manufacturer has value. To each their own.
