I remember seeing this when it first aired. This, along with Different World, helped inspire me to apply to college. Went to an HBCU. The greatest of them all. (If you know... YOU KNOOOOOW!!!) Never pledged though.

Wow! I was in high school when this aired. 😢This was the first time I ever heard the name Joe Torrey, and he just came out and took over! He was the first comedian I ever saw actually go on the offensive against the hecklers at the Apollo. He was MERCILESS, and we loved him for it. He didn’t have to go after Eva, but everyone else was fair game. Lookin’ at “stick shift” girl, I really remember that hairstyle and those big DOOR-KNOCKER earrings. Memories, memories, memories! Many thanks!

New York hip hop culture, especially then in the 80s and 90s, was dominated by the ideology of a cult called the 5% nation. They hate whites and believe they are the devil. They are an offshoot group from Farrakhan's nation of Islam. No surprise the reception these guys got from the crowd .

This was a powerful performance from Ms. Alyson Williams. And it is special on many levels. 1. She is a New York native. 2. She's at the Legendary Apollo Theatre. 3. She was able to deliver her song in the manner in which she felt was worthy of the Apollo audience. And 4th, Mama Alyson hit it out of the park.
