Good evening, it is not yet entirely clear to me whether those old electric block systems (Absolute block system, if I'm not mistaken) with a wooden case were or were not influenced by the passage of trains for the purpose of occupying and freeing the section (block) towards to which and from which the train was respectively headed or from which the train came. Furthermore, it is not clear whether there is an electrical connection between the lever that controls the opening (switching from Danger to Clear) of the starting signal and the apparatus with wooden case. In other words, was it possible to pull the lever that activated the starting signal towards you without first having received electrical consent from the next station? However, it is common ground that where there is a token block it is possible to activate the lever that opens the starting signal even before having handed over the token to the driver, unless there is a mistake on my part. This is absolute block and those are absolute block block instruments yes. The block instruments do use electricity but I'm not sure I'd call it an electric block system. There are many kinds of 'block controls' and which are provided depends on where you are and when. There is a lot of variation. In this case you can see that some of the red levers have a white band. That white band indicates that the signal is electrically locked until it is electrically released by the box in advance. In this case Shrub Hill works absolute block to Norton Junction and Norton Junction's 'section' signal (which controls the entrance to the absolute block section) is released by 'line clear' (also referred to as "locked by the block"). In other words it is indeed not possible for Norton Junction to clear their section signal until Shrub Hill moves the block indicator to 'line clear' as shown in the video. Similarly Shrub Hill cannot clear their section signal without a 'line clear' from Norton Junction. This control was very, very widely provided but there were (and may still be a couple) examples of boxes which did not have this control.

In the case of Norton Junction and Shrub Hill there are track circuits on approach to the home signals (the first signal controlled by a signal box which controls the exit from the absolute block section). If the block indicator has not been placed to the 'train on line' position by the signalman by the time a train arrives on that track circuit the track circuit occupying will place the block indicator to 'train on line' and keep it there until the track circuit clears and the signalman has turned the commutator to 'train on line' himself. Furthermore, as an additional control, once the block indicator has been placed to the 'line clear' position it will not be possible to place it to 'line clear' again until the track circuit on the approach to the home signal of the next signal box has been occupied and cleared by the passage of a train through the section. As such a 'line clear' can only be given once. This releases the section signal of the box in rear for one train only, once one train has passed the section signal it cannot then be pulled again until a second 'line clear' is received, which cannot be sent until that first train has passed through the section and occupied and cleared the track circuit on approach to the home signal of the box in advance. There were more extensive controls provided for example by Sykes' lock and block and there were less extensive controls.

@@LUAu101 Another standard control is 'home contact normal', which proves that the home signal lever has been replaced to normal, ie signal put back to danger (stop), before the next train can be accepted and a 'line clear' given for it on the block instrument.
