If you are interested - my relative's name is Charlotte Morritt. She, together with another woman and three men, committed a break in on a York warehouse, and stole silk valued in today's money at ten thousands pounds sterling. The people all came from different parts of Yorkshire, none of them lived in York. All five were hanged together at the Knavesmire in 1597. I suspect that they were trying to raise funds to liberate Mary Queen of Scots, who was under house arrest in Yorkshire at that time. I can't imagine how they thought they would be able to sell so much silk without it being noticed. Pretty naive. The details are all on the Internet in the records of York executions. Dick Turpin is there too, but a hundred years later.

Excellent video. However, your revolver is over a hundred years too early. He would have had a flintlock pistol. Actually, I have an ancestor who was hanged on the Knavesmire in the time of Elizabeth the First. I think she was part of an attempt to liberate Mary Queen of Scots. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

Loved that. Thanks. Theres a Highwayman buried in an unmarked grave at a church in Wotton-under-Edge called William Crew. Hes sposed to have known Turpin. After being caught for doing numerous highway robberies.. He admitted his crimes which was enough to hang him but denied murder. Its believed he was terrified of being dissected. But found guilty He was hung and dissected and his remains buried at the church in wootton under edge where he became a vicar when he got a pardon previously but found there was not enough money serving the lord and went back to robbery. On the day of his hanging there was a huge storm and the locals thought it was a sign from god that his hanging was wrong.

I knew a girl who was a decendent and still lived in Wotton-under-Edge and carried the Crew surname. It was said he hid his loot up in the woods around the town and its thought never recovered. Huge area to search.

As an Historian, any famous grave is not really going to be the actual grave; more than likely a tourist trap. A huge grave like that, is for sure, a tourist trap. As for grave robbing and his body, a possibility but most likely it was sold as a Cadaver before the burial and another corpse put in his place. That being said, the only truth in History is that there is no truth only interpretation. It is worth following on from this very well put together presentation, a book written by James Sharpe. He is or was a Professor of History at York University and is also the author of The Bewitching of Anne Gunter (Profile) as well as several books on crime and punishment. The book on Dick Turpin is: Dick Turpin - The Myth of the English Highwayman. Hardcover - 19 Feb. 2004 Great video and look forward to more ☺

@@TheWanderlustWayisback You present so well, very real and draws you in; I'll be watching many more I hope. If you ever come down to Wales, you may wish to check out Beddgelert, in the Snowdonia region of Gwynedd. Read up on the story of Prince Llewelyn and how he killed his hound. He killed it by mistake after thinking it had killed his son, when in fact the hound protected the Prince's son from a wolf. He carried the hound and buried it in a field. Hence the name of the village of Beddgelert. I truly wish it were true but again, the grave is also believed to be a tourist trap. There may be some truth but how much, who knows. Check it out if it interests you. Thanks for replying 👍

We(wife, daughter and I) went to Haworth about 8-9 years ago, we stayed in a hostel just below the village, lovely old building. We did all the touristy stuff including walking out the moors to the supposedly site that gave Emily the inspiration for Wuthering Heights, a long but beautiful walk, just make sure it's a clear day. The only thing we didn't do was go on the train, a big regret since. Top half of the village is beautiful, I hope they retain its oldy world look.. Enjoyed and subscribed 😊

@TheWanderlustWayisback5 күн бұрын
I don't think there's an exact figure but give what you can afford it will be appreciated. We had the same housekeeper for the entire week so rather than leaving a few pound each day we gave a note (in his hand) towards the end of our trip. I can't remember think it was about £20 for 7 days for one room. My son did the same because they had their own room. I'd also recommend tipping the waiters, you might find some more attentive if you do that 👌
