As a beginner I was damaging all my draw reeds cause I have a hard pull. Switching to a seydel I finally got to learn. I kept blowing out my hohners and eventually made the switch to something with steel reeds
@jantonisito18 күн бұрын
I have three Session Steel . They may work for some people but i believe that seydel which is arguably great harmonica maker did a poor piss job designing Session Steel from the point of view of ergonomics. They are about 2.5mm thicker than Hohner Rocket and covers meet the comb at a steep angle. The mouthpiece doues not extend ito your mouth - it is very flat. All that means that whenn you try to make air tight embouchure - which is effortless on Hohner harps it FAILS for many people wirg Session Steel. Look it up and you will see tons of posts from people complaining that their new Session Steel is lwaky . Except it is not the harp but their embouchure. Brought by poor design by Seydel. Some peopke may eventually overcome it and some may not - i believe Seydel neeyds to acknowledge that and redesign that harp.

I'm guessing your not a tongue blocker? When I got my first session I puckered then & I felt the same so it went in the drawer for a while but when I got half decent at tongue blocking it all changed. I'm definitely understanding what your saying if you pucker then yes it's a flat front. But I do know pucker players who play them well. But I'm hearing you for sure, they are not my favourite anymore. 1847 classics are much better
@jantonisito17 күн бұрын
@@CandidHarper I do tongue blocking but a different variant - U-blocking - you get strong and very clean single note but it is hard to bend that way. So I use it for Irish music on solo tuned Session Steel and on some chromatics. But for bending I have to do a different embouchure - not exactly pucker because that too restricts your mouth muscles from bending. More like forming a channel through middle of lower lip (for lack of better description). I works on every harp - snadwich or recessed comb - including tremolos. But it barely works on SS. I hear what you saying maybe it is different for tongue blockers - that technique is completely foreign for me. PS. I am thinking about BlueMoon combs for existing SS and switching to 1847 Noble in the future.

Had one for years. My big complaint was that it was easy to leave the silent light blinking, instead of turning it completely off. If you put it in the "tobacco pouch," it could blink for days without notice, running the battery down. 🤣

Here in the U.S. Special 20 will cost you $60.00 dollars. They are pricey. Rocket series cost even more. Only Rocket I'd be willing to purchase at such cost would be The Rocket Low F. Fender makes the Blues DeVille at $35.00 or $40.00 dollars which is every bit as good as any Honer product. Even the low price Fender Blues Deluxe at $12.00 dollars is a good and reliable harmonica for the price. I don't know if Fender is available in The U.K. however.

Fair play Jase, it's a tricky one, especially as I usually lip purse the six, I've noticed if I'm more relaxed the tongue block comes easier, i guess it's good to be able to do both, depending on the tune and genre of music. Keep it up mate!

They are the same notes, but you can bend 2 draw at least in two steps, while you can't bend 3 blow...

You definitely got the frustration scene right! (7:23 -->) "Oh, I'm out of breath. I'm full of breath... What do you mean 'RELAX!'" I didn't appreciate Tomlin's suggestion to do the chugging exercise for breathing. But your comments make me think I need to incorporate it into my practices. Thanks so much for your patient and detailed guidance. I think I made some improvements just today.

I have a harmonica on me 24/7. It's helped me to just relax, harp becomes part of you. Practice belly breathing when in bed, walking, in bath, watching TV etc. inhale belly pumps up. Exhale let belly go down . This will excellerate all things harp

If you were doing a fox chase, for example, tongue blocking, then the three blow would be easier to articulate the two draw.
@norfolknwhey4787Ай бұрын
Some of the squeaking comes from bending a bit past the note. I’m holes with a half step bend, it’s easy to bend it too far which puts torsional strain on the reed when it’s moving, which causes that high pitched harmonic squeel. Easy to remedy, play your reference note first on hole 4, and then bend the 6 down to it but not past it. Keep it up, you’re improving with each video 👍🏼

I also believe tongue blocking develops a tactility in your tongue that helps you navigate the harmonica better. As a former lip purser, this is something I only discovered after taking up tongue blocking.

My 2 hole draw is fine. It’s my 3 hole draw that gives me fits, specifically when bending. No matter what I try the notes sound choked off when bending. I can bend the 4 hole fine but not the 3 hole. I’m a newbie at harp so maybe it’s technique I dunno. I do k or it’s getting frustrating.

Old vid, As a beginner, and after watching many vids, I found its, as you put it, drawing air too hard. What was happening, I could play the note easily, if I hardly breathed in. But playing a tune I could never get it. My conclusion as a beginner you haven't mastered the most important thing. Breathing technique, and your breathing is not Consistent you can get away with the other notes.
