I think osu has become another metaphorical "pp" measuring contest but I also think the attitude put out to the wider online community by select few osu community members should be considered. I don't see 1000pp plays as impressive any more for two reasons. The first one is the maps they are set on no longer male rhythmic sense to me, stuff like yomi yori, freedom dive suggest the song's rhythm by the way the note circles are placed as well as the decision of where to use streams and where or use jumps. Jumps the rhythm sounds "jumpy", same is clear on promethian kings and you better believe when the day comes for someone to finally FC promethian kings I'll remember it forever even if that play is not 1000pp. For me it is not the pp that matters it's what went into it and stream maps have seem to have that, they're long and fast, you need a crap ton of endurance and to really perfect the map because it goes on for so long and that's entertaining to watch. The usual 1000pp maps meanwhile, I find they don't have any of that. Most significantly they appear nonsensical to me, the jumps do not suggest the type of rhythm and even the streams seem to be nonsensically placed. It just seems like the mapper decided the place a bunch of 1 2's for some difficulty rather than because it fitted the song well. I get the impression that these maps are made by relatively speaking inexperienced kids, maybe I'm wrong about that but it's far from the case the people who watch osu content and enable its popularity will be knowledgeable about these aspects of the game so if it seems this way then it will be this way for all intents and purposes. There is afterall 500k+ 6 digits and under 100k counting the rest. So one may assume at least a sizeable portion of the views would come from those players. As one of those, I don't understand more technical aspects of the game well. I don't see 1000pp, I just see "chaotic jumps with no rhythm, this does not interest me" The other thing I would say is that the osu community is "toxic"; not all of it of course that would be irrational. Nevertheless exposure +ve or - ve can impact ones opinion of a given thing and sadly a select minority of osu players (at least they seem to be osu players) have made it their life's work to intentionally go into other communities and create discord among its members, I've experienced that personally and it has without question caused me to adopt a somewhat negative view of the osu community and get less enjoyment out of things associated with it such as top plays because it's gone from admiration and respect for those players for having the mental fortitude to push the game to such absurd levels to a sense of confusion albeit with respect (because it's still impressive as heck, if you can't see that nothing will impress you) but confusion in the form of "I respect you for this but... Why, why would you be such an idiot to dedicate this much time to something associated with so much toxicity. I am not sure if this is the true nature of things, it's possible the aforementioned people causing problems are actually lying about being from the osu community and are trolls who wish to shine the osu community in a bad light for whatever reason but in my case and possibly others it's extremely effective because I am very well aware of how strict the osu staff team is on toxicity within their community so when you have what seem to be beyond reasonable a group of osu players doing exactly that in the communities you are in it, leaves an extremely bad impression. Simply put for me and maybe others similar, the osu community has gone from being "those guys who do truly impressive things with circles and sliders and don't bother anyone to "those guys who do truly impressive things with circles and sliders but who are actually some serious assholes under all of that gold leaf" Idk whether that helps but that's my opinion as someone that watched osu plays for around the time the top 10 players looked like this angelsim, _index, HDHR, Wubwoofwolf, rrtyui, TheLewa, Isokasapupuja, hivick225, Sayonara-Bye and I completely forgot the name of the last one
@foreverkurome
@foreverkurome Ай бұрын
Edit: missing one was only freaking Rafis of all people, I have no idea how I forgot that. But yes that was the unordered top 10 at the time I started watching I'm certain of angelsim being ranked 10, Wubwoofwolf, hvick225 and sayonara-bye and rrtyui being 1,2,3 and 5 respectively but I'm not sure on the rest.

i think another reason ppl focus too much on pp is cus there are just so many more osu players setting more scores on more maps. it's hard to filter through it all when i started, i had played most hard maps, so i knew firsthand how impressive a play was as soon as a heard a player fced it. also feel like i knew way more players back then

The number originates from when cookiezi set the pp record on blue zenith with hr, it was worth 727pp. Later down the line he choked the map again but with hdhr, the play was worth 727pp once again. It was already a funny number by then, but what really transcended it was when aireu got a play on Guess Who is Back, which was worth 727pp and he had a really funny reaction. He scremed “727 WHEN YOU SEE IT, WHEN YOU F-ING SEE IT”. This spawned the WYSI thing as well, which associates with the number 727

That feels artificial. It wasn't beaten out of love for the game, It was beaten because someone coughed up enough money to induce no lifing the map. That doesn't feel the same, that feels like a business deal and ultimately admitting defeat cus it can't be done without throwing money at people. The nature of the atmosphere is further evident from how people talk about the victor. Everything will freeze and freedom dive didn't have that toxic bitter atmosphere and it shows how the community changed for the worst late 2010s to early 2020s
@b1rch
@b1rch Ай бұрын
I see what you mean, and from one aspect I do agree. The bounty without a doubt motivated more people to push to fc the map, HOWEVER, if that was the only reason why the map was defeated, then why has the same not happened to The Apparition? It has like a 1000$ bounty, but we have yet to see someone truly push through it. It's a bit of a dilemma, but I think it's nice that there are bounties, they help other people realize what truly can be possible if one pushes hard enough
@foreverkurome
@foreverkurome Ай бұрын
@@b1rch I don't have a problem with bountying something or someone per se ultimately it doesn't have much relevance to me since it's extremely unlikely I'll ever be good enough to do the maps they concern but osu also a spectators sport, if it wasn't it wouldn't get the views it does and from a spectators point of view which is mine in this instance what should be way more enjoyable to watch... Because stuff has clearly gotten way more advanced since the days of blue zenith, freedom dive and everything will freeze is actually markedly less enjoyable to watch directly as a result of this clearly present and previously absent sense of bitterness. That's my problem with the idea, it's obviously having a negative impact on enjoyment factor and people are doing it more out of a sense of "I want 1000 bucks" than I "I want to fc this" the former of which is a lot less enjoyable as a spectator. The popularity of a video game has experienced sig decline when an audience perceives toxicity as the primary trait before now.

I feel like one thing top players can do to fix the mentality on scores is by setting plays that the general audience can't ignore. Like if they stray away from the aim and speed slop, and try to play maps that are more focused on multiple skill sets then it would be more impressive. Like lets say a map is filled with 9* jumps, and the filler is easy 5-6* speed/stamina, sure it's impressive they can hit the jumps, but it wouldn't be as impressive if the map was filled with sections that are 8* jumps, 8* speed, and 7* stamina. I think the fault does sort of fall on the top players AND the audience. Top players who are good at one skill set, focus on that skill set and set top plays with it, and people will think that the map they played is slop for whatever skill set they are good at. But if the top player branched out and focused on more skill sets and played a map that may not have as high a skill ceiling as the other map, but had multiple mid-high skill ceilings, then it would be way more impressive.
@astraha.
@astraha. Ай бұрын
I don't know how long you have been around but there are many already set plays that are not "slop" or pp focused. It's not like top players snap their fingers and set "unique" scores. Ever thought about what "9* Jumps/streams/whatever* means? Star rating is the same as pp, it doesn't tell you the exact difficulty nor how the score is. There are 5* maps that are considered harder than 7*s because of skill sets required. It's all about the complexity of patterns combined with the music. And do take that "complex" seriously. Because star rating, pp and other random numbers dont tell you anything with 100% precision. Its not anyones fault, literally how can it be? Just because we subjectively consider something less valueable nowadays its now someones fault? It doesn't matter what the opinion of 7* star maps are (or literally any map etc.), they still take and will take the same amount of skill to execute and perform a good score. I respectfully say that you have a L take.

@jrtta Ай бұрын
@astraha. I think you missed the point, and I've been around since 2017 so please don't bring the "how long have you been around" argument up with me. I'm not saying the plays they produce aren't difficult, I'm saying that most of it (keyword "most") is just one skill set slop that all looks the same. And if you were looking, I said the fault falls on everyone, the people who don't care enough to enjoy scores, and the players who produce scores that are only seen as "high pp play". As you said, star rating, pp, and other random numbers don't tell me anything, and you're right. But what does tell me something is the way the top players set the scores that earn them the pp. If all they're doing is using one skill set, people are going to see it as "this guy is a one trick pony, BUT LOOK AT THE PP VALUE" while ignoring the players who push all the skill sets to the extreme and actually set impressive scores. An example of a player like this is Maliszewski. He is an insane tournament player, who manages to set scores that other players can't replicate and he barely earns any pp from the scores. Yet people still know of him because of just how good of a player he is in the multiple skill sets he uses to set said plays. Also respectfully, this was just my opinion on the matter, so even if you type "respectfully" and then say I have an "L take" its still not polite. If my opinion doesn't match with your opinion, than you can simply just scroll instead of commenting and putting down my thoughts and how I view things. Also, you're probably not even gonna bother reading this after leaving your comment. But if you did happen to read this thank you for taking the time to, because at the end of the day I'm just a random dude on the internet so please don't let my views bug you in anyway and have a good day.

@@jrtta Dont worry about it. I have read your response. I didn't mean to let the "dont know how long you are around" thingy shine as much as you thought so I apologize for that. As well as the last part. I guess I just wasn't fully satisfied with how you worded your original comment. It's just that I think you can't really blame the people that ignore other maps with focus on other skill sets. Malis is a good example and does get the recognition he deserves but even so, people still will care about the pp more unfortunately. Precisely because it's not score focused. It's a factor that represents the score in a more digestable way because for most players, the scores/plays set are just not fully comprehensible. But the pp value is, because it was always there to stick around with anyone that started playing the game. People like to see numbers grow, especially their ranks, and it doesn't help that it's only determined by the pp value and nothing else. So theres no point to focus on anything else (thats at least what we get conditioned for). Everyone has their fair share of experience with getting a good pp value or farming one. So pp will ALWAYS be weighted much more in most minds in this community. However those are just my thoughts. I take more psychological aspects into account so that's why I disagree with your opinion. I wish you a good day as well.

When i got the game almost 4-5 years ago, I was mesmerised when i saw even the most mediocre plays on the most weirdest maps. It mesmerized me because of the map itself, never the PP. I have been on and off the game, but i still found lots of amusement, goals, pleasure and a motive to play the game, looking up at players who have set insane scores, fast paced, long streams, even weird gimmicks like gn's unforgiving flashlight map. It really has inmspired me to keep pushing for the game, the level between me and the top players, the scores i was setting. It was all a perfect recipe for someone like me to improve and get a score i enjoyed. Recently, It hasnt been the same. I usually get on osu to burn off energy hitting rapid notes or playing long streams for 20-30 minutes and calling it quits. Exceeding barriers has been amazing to see on osu, even if they were niche and hybrid scores that somehow make it to the top. I twas fun looking at something off meta reaching the top. You cant really blame anyone for the current state of farming on osu, its simply a competition to hit number 1, and the best way to do it is from a really shitty and boring method, Maps have slowly designed themselves to be relative to PP, it doesnt reflect a song. Mapped music in the past took the aspects of the song, and reflected it into a map/physical variation that seemed like interaction between the map and the music (long consistent notes would have streams, fast janky tech music would be very chaotic and something unique to play). Now its gotten to the point to where the map and notes played doesnt reflect the actual song or music anymore. Its hard to play a song that hypes you up with a challenge when it is all the same visually and mechanically Its been the same patterns, same mechanics, same bar rising up. This game wont be fun for me anymore if even the top 100 of players want to play a map just for some number to go up, I want to relate to a top player by experiencing a hard map and being like "wow, this person has spent alot of time and effort to complete and be the best among this map". Theres no motivvation, OSU is a great great game. I never would truly quit from it, just hoping that there is a time in the future where a score isnt determined from a number, but the mapping style and song itself
