Seems like you have not uploaded since 3 years, but would help if you teach about mediums, with oil it take 2 days to dry one layer, so are we supposed to work part by part? Cause otherwise everything mixes together.
@DtroitDinosaur16 сағат бұрын
There are drying oils you can use a a medium. Also I use oil because I like that I can mix the colors on the canvas before they dry. It just takes time to learn the best way to apply and blend them on the canvas. Just gotta jump in and make painting full of mistakes on the road to handling the medium of oil. Don’t be afraid to make a mess and throw a piece away and start over.

Indeed. I am “old” enough to have taken to using the ruling pen. And love the metal edge on a wooden ruler! I may try painting on board instead.

Great stuff! Have you played with a ruling pen? Classic drafting tool. Not sure how it might behave on canvas. Thanks Paula
@DtroitDinosaur13 күн бұрын
When I was an illustrator and worked mostly on illustration board i used the ruling pen a lot. They were particularly good if you need to paint a circle. Could just insert it in the compass, load it with paint and spin a perfect circle. I have tried it on canvas but the texture doesn’t allow for a very clean line. I usually just concentrate hard and paint circles by hand now. Thanks for that tip though. It is a great idea for when working on a smooth surface.

Question- I understood the premise of what you are saying, but how does this transfer to color? Lets say I want to do a predominately blue painting, do I have to do an 11 point blue scale to figure out which blues to use? That seems like a lot of unused paint.
@DtroitDinosaur2 ай бұрын
@@CindyBaertson Hi Cindy. I would say it’s really an exercise for training your eye to discern tonal values more accurately. Think of it like a musician doing scales. Being able to judge the tones in your pieces is the key to most problems. I quite often do paintings in sepia and the practice is the same. It may help you to go ahead and do some preliminary exercises in whatever color you want to use just so you are warmed up before you start your painting. Preliminary work is never wasted time. Hope that helps.

I've tried oil paper for oil pastels and Im having a hard time with it. Conversely, it hasnt stained the paper and when I rub to blend hard, it can take off the colour. Was I mistaken when it said perfect for oils? I assumed all oil paint products, including oil pastels.

Hhhmmm... I'm sorry I cannot help with your issue. I've never used oil pastels on this kind of paper. I would have thought it would work as well. I had no problems using paint on it. 1:40 Respectfully, I am going to have to contest this, it only looks complementary by contrast, not to mention there is the ambient light of the room, the color of the area in shade is not affected by the color of the primary light source unless it bounces around to the shaded area as bounce light, otherwise, the area in shadow is defined by the ambient light in the environment, here is a video by a professional lighting artist explaining what I mean kzbin.info/www/bejne/hX3MYqeVbZaAd5osi=oukNuDbBKsXKWzVx

@@DtroitDinosaur agreed! Also I didn't wanna seem rude it's just that the notion of warm light and cool shadows(+the opposite) as well as complementary light and shadow isn't inherent, its a nice thing to do for visual appeal, so it's still rather useful, I hope I don't seem disrespectful or anything cuz I do respect you as you are far more experienced and just in general, you make amazing videos with a lot of great insights

Hi! Any suggestions painting straight lines with kids? Going to try this with them. Now…how can I make perfect circles of different sizes…again, with kids
@DtroitDinosaur3 ай бұрын
Depending on how young the kids are you may be surprised how they pick up the technique. It might be easier for them to have it flat on a table rather than upright. This way they don’t have to support the ruler and handle the brush. They can just hold the ruler in place and use the brush. Hopefully they will have fun trying to learn it. Painting circles is a tricky one. I don’t really have any good advice for painting circles other than lots of practice. In the past Ive used a draftsman’s inking compass loaded with paint but that wouldn’t be for kids. Might be able to use a cup or a can to stroke the paint around. Sorry I’m not much help with this part.

Tonal values? What, are there some other kind of values in painting? No. There are just values. Use of the words tone, and tonal can be very confusing because they are not well-defined terms (like chroma, saturation,etc.). Tone means different things to different artists, leading to a lack of clarity.

Great question! First of all I would say study great design. Spend time on line looking at great masters paintings, vintage movie posters, graphic design. Fill your social media feed with artists whose work moves you. When you find a piece of art that moves you save it to a file. Then spend some time analyzing it to figure out WHY it moves you. Don't worry about rules or golden ratios or anything like that, just focus on art that moves you and try to figure out why and then try to incorporate that into your own work. Also become an avid observer of light and the way it acts. I'm sorry for the long answer. I don't feel it is even a complete answer. We could spend hours on this. But I think it's a good place to start. Hope that helps. Jim
