The guitar player of the Stupids (UK) taped this record for me in '88. At the time i was still in the throes of USHC blasting out Deep Wound, Void, Siege and so on . I remember the warmth of the recording and musicianship of If'n - like it had been baked in the sun for a bit .

I don’t know if there is a band who can layer and create an effect like they do. I’m always so surprised how many new songs I hear and I get to that part where they start to overlap lyrics and it makes it another song I’ll love forever.

Old video but figured I'd add some new info. I own a 2000' model that's all original. Only need to upgrade clutch bushing if you ever see yourself clutching in traffic for long periods on a hot day or in a mud hole etc... under normal use they are fine! It's heat and lack of oil under certain circumstances like i said that can cause a seizure but I've yet to upgrade the clutch and previous owner claimed they hadnt either. Not something I'd generally worry about now knowing how to prevent issue. If I stop more than a minute i just put it in neutral an chill

It took me a while to appreciate the lyrics - the trick is that the end rhymes are all monorhyme (door, drawer, for etc), but there's also a lot of internal rhymes ("dismantle the door handle", "pathetic, lame aesthetic")

Every building same height Every street a straight line Team colour's yellow and blue Cheerleaders single file Perfect smiles unaffected And you won't forget Our colour's blue No you won't forget it Twenty miles westwards Home of the Redbirds Team colour's crimson blue Open up your purses For the boys to reimburse us With a goal line stand on 4th and 2 And that goal line stand Ha! Hand me down halo Halo hello Hand me down halo I saw you (I saw you) Asleep In the car (asleep in the car) On the first wave out of a fallen town. They follow to another cell (hand me down halo) (Halo hello) They follow to another cell (hand me down halo) To another cell (halo hello) I watched you (I watched you) From the bars of my room (from the bars of my room) Always got a suntan at the first light of every Sunday. And your broken teeth, like a mangled screen And your burnout smile on your ashtray face. Made me sick. You always made me sick. Made me sick. You always made me sick. Have a cigarette. have an omelet. (Take my cell now) A little nasty. a little balloon. (Take my cell now) Have a cold sore. have a nightmare. (Take my cell now) A little memory. a little history. Have a problem. have a collapse. A little sympathy. a little sympathy. (made me sick. you always made me sick) Have a pager. have a baby. (Take my cell now) A little medicine. a little discipline. Have a lie down. have a sugar hand. (20, 40, 68...) (Take my cell now) A little hassle. a little enemy. (20, 40, 68...) (Take my cell now) Have a number. have a wallet chain. (20, 40, 68...) (Take my cell now) A little nickname. a little self pity. (20, 40, 68...)

I asked Mike Watt in person after a show, he confirmed that he wrote this anticipating a potential collaboration between him and Michael Stipe that never ended up happening. Though I have a hard time believing all those "doors/drawers" weren't intended parodically

I went with Ed Crawford on December 10th 1985 to see REM live with the Minutemen opening up. D Boon died when the van crashed while on tour 16 days later. I'm 5 or 6 years older than Ed, we worked in a restaurant together. After work we'd hang out, partake, and listen to music. I was into dinosaur rock. Our common interest was The Who. We'd sing Who songs with him on guitar. This was the inspiration for the song "Windmilling". Not really, or maybe? "... 2 of us Windmilling, swirling in another time...Pete Townshend is known for Windmilling on guitar. By the way, Ed was studying music at OSU but had never played guitar in a band before fIREHOSE. He turned me on to REM by playing guitar along with the songs and that opened my eyes. When he told me he was flying to LA to audition for the Minutemen I thought he was nuts. Came back, said he got the job- leaving in 2 weeks. When 'Ragin came out...I thought it was "quirky". I would have never listen to it again if it wasn't for the fact that this was my buddy. I came to love with them and learned something valuable: (in addition to discovering that quirky can be complimentary) that great music can be challenging, or takes time to familiarize with. In 1985 Ed persuaded me to go see a band that I had never heard of: "Husker Du". It was the new day Rising tour. Ed loved it, I was thoroughly disgusted. I did not get it. But now because of Ed becoming "Ed fROMOHIO" I love the Huskers, who's picture is on the cover of "If'n". Bob Mould is one of my favorites. Grant Hart (RIP) is also amazing. I didn't like the Minuteman either when we saw them open up for REM even though they did The Who song "Substitute" in their set. But Ed went out the next day and bought double nickels on the dime and was fanatical. It was four months later that he found out how to get ahold of Mike Watt and the rest is history. Concerning the debate about REM I got to hang out with fIREHOSE every time they came through Columbus for several years. Ed was definitely an REM fan, but he told me (after having joined the band) either that Mike Watt would make fun of them, or would make fun of Ed for being such a big fan. I can't remember which, but I think that for Watt it just wasn't cool to like REM at that time. A couple of mentions- when Watt broke up the band Ed became roommates with John Wurster who is Bob Moulds drummer (amongst several other projects) Ed also toured with Ryan Adam's "Whiskeytown" and was guitarist when they performed on Austin City Limits January 26, 1998. (Ed's birthday) I went once to see "Southern Culture On the Skids" and was surprised to see my old buddy Ed was their roadie! I asked him why and he said cause I love this band! They were fantastic and funny as hell.

The Ed From Ohio story is so fucking epic. I heard him interviewed on a NYC college radio station and his story about meeting Watt was so fuckin cool. Saw and filmed Watt last year - still editing the footage - I'll post to YT when I'm done. RSTEVEH - do you still speak to Ed?
@chrisbeliveau65816 жыл бұрын
This was really cool to read, thanks. I've always wondered, if you know, did Ed feel weird about making this band in the sense of having D Boon pass away? I think I've read before that he was unsure if he wanted to do the band.

Wow, great story, I can feel the rock history ... I saw fIREHOSE about 4 times in college and even hung out with them at a warehouse show they played with Helios Creed and a reggae band I can't remember their name. George Hurley signed my hat and I wore it for years. I had the privilege of hanging out with Mike again when he came to town with the Second Men and talked to him for about 40 min, he knew my old bass player Stretch. I always hoped they would get back together to do a new album or a tour at least, I think they played a festival about 8 years ago or something. I have turned every bass player on to fIREHOSE if they were'nt already into them, bums me out that they are not acknowledged more for the groundbreaking stuff they did. I miss them.

i feel bad they have been at it for quite a while 6-7 years back every one whos comment i read says there going to make it big really its unfortunate it been 10+ years since there first masterpiece was released and yet nobody i know has ever heard a mention of them queens of the stone age hit it big with the fact there music is in video games.
@cimi93x6 жыл бұрын
no need to feel sorry for the guys, not everyone wants to make it big. I make some tracks from time to time, and not once had I felt the need to actually make money out of it, and i'm sure pinback has made decent money, despite of not making it big... as for queens of the stone age, they made it before video games, they could fill out a stadium long time ago, they simply operate within a music genre, much more mainstream than pinback

I think maybe Ed was making a comment about Stipe's over reliance on symbolism,and how that gets watered down to meaninglessness... or something. Or did Mike Watt write Firehose lyrics too?

Almost. As a side project, Stipe at one point wanted to collaborate with Watt on some songs but it never materialized. This is one of the tunes Watt wrote for Stipe that ended up as a fIREHOSE tune instead.
