Jams and sonics in general change a LOT between those years… BUT a better comparison, energy wise, would be 1978 for the Dead. Check out July 1st playing the Willy Nelson fest of som sort. It’s a condensed show but WoW, what a show. Energy and pacing through the roof!

Phish wasn't filling arenas till Jerry died. The people needed a place to go and Phish won the jam band lemming lottery.
@TK-fk4po

Actually, Jerry died in Aug 95. Phish were in MSG end of 94. They would’ve been big regardless. They definitely got a boost after Jerry died but they were on track to be big anyway.
@ReflectorDetector
@ReflectorDetector Ай бұрын
Both amazing bands. Phish was in a place where (according to Trey) they were very happy with where they were at. After Jerry died a lot of people were in search of something and found Phish. However, unless you were/are just into the scene it is very hard for non fans of Phish’s music to stick around due to the uniqueness of the music.

Grateful Dead were the OG jam Band. Phish rode the coat tails and are now doin their own thing with it. Kudoos to both . Niceky done on each part. Just callin a spade a spade
@jeffgallucci4558
@jeffgallucci4558 Ай бұрын
Not really, it's like calling a spade a club. The dead are folk blues rock and phish is jazz prog rock. Yes the Dead was an influence but ride the coattails? Phish was already selling out sheds across the country doing their thing by the time Jerry died.
@chillathrillagorilla7765

I was there on phish tour in early 90s. I literally was there, on tour witnessing how it all went down. GD was the absolute Original Jam band. They were selling out 200 person venues in 94 fall. Somw GD folks brought a huge chunk of the ⚡️⚡️⚡️ to the scene. Virginia shows. Ask anyone who was actually there. After that it went from 200 person shows to 300 to 1000k people to selling out MSG. Which is a Huge milestone. I witness in the flesh people , like myself going from Dead tour to Phish tour because of the slight similarities in the music ( jams... also their version of drums , space in vocal form. Just a couple examples) They thrived well with the help of GD world ⚡️. Jerry soon died. People were lost . Phish exploded. Here to stay. Cheers to them. Talented musicians. They payed attention in school... butttt will never have the deep soul and magic that the GD conjured up nightly . From the beginning. If you were there in 94 you can't deny it. If you weren't there then it's just nit possible to envision. Two great bands . One is just the OG. One is the ( Goose to Phish) so to say

Phish wouldn't exist if the Grateful Dead hadn't paved the way, and I am a wicked Phish head. An amoeba had to exist before an advanced monkey made music. I skipped a few steps, but music has always and will always evolve into something new. Comparing a Roman chariot to a space station isn't fair.
@ReflectorDetector
@ReflectorDetector Ай бұрын
Haha I like the Roman Chariot to Space Station comparison. I have fun comparing although they really are both so unique it really is hard to compare. Next time I’m going to try to find something where they both go pretty deep.

@chillathrillagorilla7765 Ай бұрын
Thank you for your ever true statement. It's absolute facts. It doesn't mean Phish isn't a horrible band. For some reason Phish fans take it that way.. Am I correct when I say Phish is the the Grateful Dead ad Goose is to Phish to give a somewhat similar explanation? Goose sounds similar to Phish in a way and probably wouldn't have their sound if Phish didn't pave the way for Goose.

These jams were both mid, but at least Phish tried to take the jam somewhere before slipping off into that late 2000's drone jam crap. The Dead just vamped. There was no tension or conflict or interesting themes. It was pretty boring.

They're tighter for certain, being more highly trained musicians and a smaller ensemble. But better is subjective. The Dead wrote much better songs and to me just feel more soulful and inspired.
@ethanbrown1083
@ethanbrown1083 Ай бұрын
@@haikat4 They wrote better songs if that type of songwriting is what you are into. I personally am more into the composition and quirkiness of phish's songwriting than the Dead's storytelling Americana style. I love both but I feel alot of the americana-esque stuff can get boring because most songs in that genre are very very similar. I feel that Phish has a much wider variety of a musical palette to offer, but the dead were damn good at what they did and it was always from the soul. I think that Phish is very soulful as well, but in more of a Stevie Wonder/James Brown way while the dead are soulful in the Merle Haggard, or John Prine way.
@haikat4
@haikat4 Ай бұрын
@@ethanbrown1083 That's fair. Love them both. Country/Blues/Americana is what speaks to me personally so I'm biased. I also love me some prog and I think that's more where Phish comes from musically.
