Affirmed had a stamina rarely seen. He was always running with the pacesetters, but as they typically fell back, he did not. Alydar was always charging from the pack. But because Affirmed never tired, it was hard for the charging Alydar to overcome Affirmed's pace and the little extra kick Affirmed still had left. Tough to beat a pacesetter that doesn't fall off of the pace.

Back when racing was amazing, horses were sound and owners cared about entertaining the public. I feel the sport is dying. It likely won't totally disappear but it is being shoved to the back of the sports line. The people running the sport seemed to hate the sport.

1997. Overall, all 3 races... are still to this day, the "best" complete triple crown series since 1997. I can't think of a better one. Certainly not when you take into effect the rivalry of Touch Gold, Free House, Silver Charm and Captain Bodgit, with Free House and Silver Charm being the main characters. Wow. What a year for the TC series! Silver Charm was my first love of horse racing. He's what got me started. He doesn't have much time left with us on Earth. :( His memories he gave us will last forever. RIP Bob and Beverly Lewis. They let Silver Charm run into his 5 year old season. 21 times in the money out of 24 races. Enjoy your twilight years old boy.

Still the “ love of my life” horse 🤍 I loved Sunday Silence also, but SC just captured my heart the first time I saw him run and to this day I follow him. He’s special. I will cry like a baby when he’s gone. He will always be my favorite 🤍

I was at Saratoga when Arrogate broke the track record. What a horse! He definitely was never the same after shipping to Dubais. His babies were runners and it’s a shame we won’t get to see more of them!

He was taken down, and justifiably so. Pincay, riding Affirmed, was unaware of the incident while it was happening, but he has acknowledged when he saw the replay he knew Affirmed would be coming down. But even if the DQ had been controversial, it still would count as a loss for Affirmed and a win for Alydar. Both Secretariat and Dr. Fager had losses to DQs that were far less clear than Affirmed's in the Travers. The Travers was a hollow victory, though, for Alydar's trainer John Veitch.

No wonder what if Sunday Silence had enough stamina to deal with the Belmont, or if Affirmed lost the last leg in Belmont to Alydar. Rivalris keeps going on and is interesting even Sunday Silence is not a son of Affirmed.

With all due respect Kevin. Silver Charm was a steel charcoal gray colt at the start of his 2 yr. maiden race. He began roaning out as he aged .His foal registration states his color as gray. There's no such thing as a bad color on a good horse, a quote my father Dr. William E. Worthington DVM used to say.

Watching Alydar win the Champaign brings such a big smile to my face. Look at him go right in the stretch. I wish I could see it in higher definition. I'm a sucker for the almost-winners. I love Alydar and Sham. Not to take away the reduculous skill of Affirmed or especially Secretariate, as they were the better horses in the match ups. But I can't help but love two of the biggest losers of the 70s.

The loss of a great horse is always so painful to me! But this loss just...i just can't describe the hurt! 3-4 yrs after these incredible wins, he's taken from us. All to soon! WHY?
