Good stuff. I'm new to engraving (5w laser) and going to try slate coasters, for personal use (at first). I was expecting $20 for a set of 4 but your profit margin is awesome - congrats. My question is do you have to lacquer them? Do you need to do that to preserve the engraving or is it just for getting that shine on them? Either way, thanks for the video.
@TheDadCave22 күн бұрын
Thanks for the question! I clear coat them for the exact reasons you mentioned. I got some slate coasters as part of a whiskey set that were laser engraved and over time the image on the coasters faded with use. I figure the clear coat would help to prevent fading and enhances the image contrast. Good luck with your laser. I am planning more laser engraving videos, are there any other topics you might want covered in videos?

I think it's actually better if they're not perfect. I made a set a while ago and I planed and sanded them to within a few hundreds of a mm and the game was too easy. When they all fit perfectly and are sanded smooth, the tower is just too stable and with a bit of patience we could get the tower all the way to a fish bone structure with just the middle pieces of each level remaining. The solution was to take about half the blocks and take just a little off the top with coarse sandpaper.

You’re absolutely right. The variations in the blocks are necessary for removing them. Thanks for sharing your tip!

The Modelo was probably not the best to start with haha. Looks good though. How did you mount it to the wall? I was thinking of using a router and keyhole bit on the backside. There are also sawtooth hangers, or single/double keyhole fittings? I feel like opening a bottle, especially if tipsy, needs a solid mounting point so hangers and keyhole fittings probably not the best. Sorry for the rambling, but id love to hear how you did it as well as if it has held up well over the years. Definitely got yourself a sub. Thanks man!

Answering Questions About Hanging Bottle Openers, Thanks for the questions!
@TheDadCave4 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, the Modelo was the only beer I had on hand. I made two counterbored holes on the bottle opener. One on top and one on the bottom. Then just simple hardware screws into a stud. I completely agree that it should be secured to the wall with no movement. That's why I didn't opted for other hangars like you mentioned. Be sure to check out the short I made in response to your comment if you want to see how it's holding up.

Does anyone know if actively boiling for 20 minutes is necessary? It's summer and I don't want to heat up my kitchen that much. Would pouring boiling water over the corks and just letting them soak for 20-30 minutes produce the same effect?
@TheDadCave4 ай бұрын
I think you could achieve the same result if you put them in a container and covered them with something so they could steam. I would try using some sort of glass bakeware bowl and a plate to cover it.

Or use a tupperware dish and the microwave and cover with the lid when it's boiled then let sit for a few minutes. Trial and error will tell you more. Start with a few DUD corks that don't matter then move over to your better corks and finally you'll be an expert and ready to tackle all the premium corks.
