Stop telling people cayuga ducks lay black eggs. It's wrong and misleading. SOME hens lay a darker bloom over their eggs temporarily, usually shortly after molt or early in the laying season. They're not always black, they go from very light gray to charcoal and do so when they feel threatened to camouflage their eggs from predators. Not all cayugas do this. It is not a very common thing.
@FreshEggsDaily3 күн бұрын
I'm sorry? Cayuga ducks do lay black eggs. Yes, they start out very dark in the beginning of the season, but then lighten up as the season progresses, but the eggs are black. And its not a bloom on the egg that is black. It's black pigment. Like other duck breeds, not all will lay black, just like all runners don't lay blue eggs, but I have plenty of photos of the black eggs from our Cayuga that prove what I'm saying. And I've never heard that they change the shell color when they feel threatened! www.fresheggsdaily.blog/2023/08/all-about-cayuga-ducks.html

Is this good for roosters as well?
@FreshEggsDaily3 күн бұрын
if you have a rooster in with your hens, the only practical way to feed him is the same as they eat. Layer feed won't hurt a rooster, but just be sure to put the calcium supplement in a separate dish. He won't eat it but the hens can pick at if if they need more calcium. If you have a boys only flock, you can use a grower feed that's lower in calcium as your base.

I have learned so much from you this past year. I have raised 4 very healthy, friendly Barred Rock hens that were hatched April 1st. One started laying eggs Sept 1st with another one or two also giving an egg a day. Thus far, I get a maximum of only 1 or 2 eggs daily. At what age will they all start producing eggs? We are in south Texas where it is currently 96* F with night temp about 70* F. They free range about 10 hours per day and are safely locked in a 6' x 9' run with coop and nesting boxes at dusk. After grazing for a couple of hours in the morning, the hens that produce eggs are usually done laying by 1:30 PM. Thank you for all that you do and share.
@FreshEggsDaily12 күн бұрын
That's about normal. 18 or 20 weeks is about when you start seeing eggs. But each lays on her own schedule! So they'll start when they're ready. Hopefully soon.

So sometimes the floaters can be safe to eat? I personally also dont want to chance it but I hate throwing away food 😭
@FreshEggsDaily24 күн бұрын
Sure they can. If you crack the egg and it still looks and smells okay, it's probably fine, but there is more chance of salmonella and other bacteria having multiplied the older the egg is.

Absolutely Beautiful! I know many have stated no food and water in the coup . In the South it is so hot . Shouldn’t they have water at least
@FreshEggsDaily24 күн бұрын
If you live in the South, I would suggest constructing a 100% predator-proof run attached to your coop so the chickens can sleep outside if they want to. Chickens can't see in the dark, so they aren't hopping off the roost to get a drink of water at night, but if you don't let them out at sunrise, then yes, they will likely be looking for water.

Oh thank you for the info on the feed, seems my layer wants the grower and the 3 growers want the layer! 😮 I let them free range once or twice a day when I can be with them and supervise. My layer sleeps in the house and the pullets are in the coop and run. I do hope to integrate the layer but boy she just wants all the food and treats for herself. 😢 Doesn’t help that two of the pullets are Araucana’s and one is an Easter egger, but they get along just fine, it’s my layer who is a Marian’s that seems to be the bossy boots. The Easter egger is almost the size of the Marian’s so she should be able to defend herself pretty well, it’s the little Araucanian I worry about.
@FreshEggsDailyАй бұрын
Yes that's pretty common and why when you have mixed ages in the same flock, you should put everyone on the grower feed and provide free-choice oyster or eggshell for the layers. www.fresheggsdaily.blog/2012/12/quick-reference-feed-guide-chick-to.html
