Honestly, at the time, Lance Bass' casting made sense. There was no preconception of what Sephiroth "ought to" sound like in English, but because of his status as a notoriously bishounen character, they seem to have tried to find an English voice who shared in those qualities, and 2001-2002 era Lance Bass at the height of his N'Sync popularity definitely qualified. And he did do his best. Almost everything bad I have to say about his performance comes from the fact that his VA was very poorly mixed relative to the music and sound effects of the boss battle, and as a result he sounds digitally muddy and far away. As this video demonstrates, the actual voice lines sound MUCH better now that we can, you know, ACTUALLY HEAR THEM. I would have been fine with Lance being Sephiroth a while longer. He had a good voice for the part, and if given a second chance, he could have projected a lot more menace, but this was honestly amazing as a first ever attempt at voicing the character in English. That George Newbern was so good that he set the standard going forward isn't a knock on Lance's performance beyond "the fans and crew found someone they liked more".
