Great video, to bad I missed this one. My chasing partner (my nephew) was in PR and I told him to go to the east to document the storm but he didn’t, it was a little frustrating. 😅 Later He regretted his decision, missed opportunity. I am glad you were there to document it, really enjoyed your video. Thanks

Thank you so much for your comment, it's much appreciated! This was an unexpected chase for me. I had a vacation planned for that week, and had to move my ticket to arrive two days earlier. I wouldn't have chased ERNESTO if it weren't due to the trip. Moreover, that evening as I was waiting in Fajardo, and after CPA had passed, there was not much happening, and I was seriously thinking about returning to Gurabo --glad I didn't! Earlier recon and satellite-derived wind data showed that the feederband had winds in excess of 60kts, but there was uncertainty whether it'd reach eastern PR due to the storm track. The hurricane models also showed that this feature had strong winds, and it verified quite well. Out of all storm experiences passing just to the NE of PR, this has been the most remarkable. The intensity of the feederband reminds me a little of GEORGES' feederband bringing intense winds and rainfall, even when the eye was already over the Mona Passage.

WOW!!! Totally incredible capture, Jose! Milton’s back-half was super impressive. I particularly like the shots of the palm and trees starting around 17:30 in the video, it definitely shows off those intense bursts and dense rainfall in the eyewall! It’s also crazy how persistent the peak conditions were, they really seemed to go on and on. Truly amazing intercept and video!
@HuracanadoWX2 ай бұрын
@@TropmetStormChasing thank you so much for this comment, Michael! The 2nd half really packed the punch in this case. As you rightly mention, it was also a pretty prolonged blast, in part because I managed to stay mostly inside the eyewall, but also due to the size of the RMW and the rather average forward movement of the storm. I’m glad that you liked this video! I tried to set up outside to film and capture the storm sounds better. It was another annoying nighttime hit, but the fact that the lights remained on at that mall really helped my filming effort. Thanks again, and already thinking about what 2025 may have in store!

Do you think they will change the landfall intensity post-season?

No big changes are likely, given aircraft data until right before landfall, plus radar velocities and satellite intensity estimates.

AWESOME video, Jose!!! HELENE was such a unique and, in some ways, challenging intercept... but, you totally nailed it! Some of those big bursts just prior to the eye passage were incredible... and even more amazing that I could still hear the frogs croaking over all that noise. I particularly loved the sound of that howling wind right at the start of the back-half. I'm really surprised that gas station canopy didn't go down while you were filming it. Amazing footage, as always on a truly historic storm and landfall!
@HuracanadoWX2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment, Michael! It’s truly appreciated. I was also amazed at how strong the winds were during that eye-eyewall interface period -they were probably some of the most intense of that night. I think that this gas station had some repairs post-Idalia, based on some awning that seemed quite new. It shook a bit during some of those intense 1st half gusts, but held pretty well despite losing a couple of metal sheets. For the 2nd half, those wires really helped to enhance the sounds of those hurricane intensity gusts. The frogs were crazy-loud indeed! LOL. I’d say that since Frances I haven’t heard such a “concert”!

There were gust winds registered at the high mountains were like 160+ my aunt house is built on concrete the garage was reinforced aluminum that was screwd to the edge of the 10 inch thick roof. And deep in concrete the collums. It took the roof og the garage and it ripped a huge chunk of the concrete roof. I was in a concrete home and my ears felt like they were going to pop. Thank you so much for your very kind comment, Michael! I'm still amazed at the level of impact from this storm. I can't recall other storms on similar track bringing such strong winds to eastern PR. Maybe MARILYN, and more likely IRMA, had similar effects on Fajardo. It all seems to boil down to that very intense feederband in the SE quadrant. Widespread hurricane gust reports from St Croix, Culebra, and eastern PR, and sustained winds near hurricane intensity --- I'm sure that some bursts were at that threshold, though I aknowledge that it isn't representative of a hurricane force wind field. The latter is consistent with SFMR recon of 60kts, and SAR Satellite Winds exceeding 64kts in an RCM pass during the afternoon before the hit. What an amazing meteorological feature. I was just lucky to be in PR during that time, as I wouldn't have commited for a chase had I not schedule a vacation trip during that very week, LOL. Glad you love the editing as well --- I learned a lot from your tips!

This is absolutely FANTASTIC, Jose!!! Such a great documentation of Jeanne's impacts in Puerto Rico. It really is crazy to see how intense some of the wind impacts were across the island, certainly seems like the storm was already at hurricane intensity before landfall. It was also amazing to see your footage!!! Some of those gusts were incredible. This video certainly adds more depth to the whole Jeanne event. I wish it had been daytime during landfall in Florida, there is so little that is visible in my footage and with the impacts from Frances still visible, it was hard to distinguish which storm did what. Lol Anyway, Amazing video as always!!!

Thank you so much, Michael! You got a much “healthier” impact from JEANNE in Florida! These all-night impacts can indeed be tricky. Glad you like my JEANNE extended version! I agree that given the satellite presentation and intensity estimates, plus damage on the ground, it must’ve been a hurricane at landfall. I wish I’d gone to the coast to film it, but fortunately got to experience the NW eyewall and part of the eye. Thank you my friend, and keeping an eye on upcoming storms in 2024!

Excellent documentary. Thank you for the video. Hurricane Marilyn mashed us up in st Thomas. Caused extreme damage. To concrete and cinder block structures. We in the Virgin Islands feel that the storm was far stronger than 110mph. And another thing to keep in mind is that the hurricane center estimates wind speeds at surface level and claim that wind speeds at higher elevations are stronger than the official forecast. Much of st Thomas is hilly and well above sea level. I really hope they analyze the data and reclassify the wind speeds of the storm. But we survived and came together as a community. And we built back stronger. Building codes were modified and roofs were built to be anchored into a concrete ring beam and tied down with hurricane clips. The building codes helped tremendously with hurricane Irma. One thing with hurricane Marilyn was that the gusts of wind you would hear it down the street coming, and then when it hit your house the walls shook. Cinder block walls shaking. What a hurricane.
