I was at there... wondered in to this tent and 1st band of the day, never heard of them. Don't think they even had released anything other than the EP but they blew the house down and I've followed them since. Amazing live act

And now we have a proliferation of porn, dank meme's and staged "pranks" 😁 Seriously though, interesting stuff. It's pretty cool and fortunate how everything was (mostly) standardized from the get-go. We could've easily ended up with a mish mash of different proprietary protocols by different companies and computing and the internet would've been a whole lot different. We have come a long way in a relatively short time.

11:11 "in the case of the large superfiles - the 10 to the 11th bit weather file which we're putting on the ELIAC for example" That's 12.5 (SI-prefix) gigabytes. Very impressive for the time. Also I don't think I'm mishearing but what is the "ELIAC"? Google insists on correcting to ENIAC and overriding it brings up nothing.

I'm Cave's fan, this is a very good song, and he behaved really shitty going all "oh we all steal lol we're artists and it was from ANOTHER band, not to give the credit to those guys who caught us red-handed." Compare how huge he is in comparison to these guys and he could really behave better to them. (Also this is better than "palaces")

Nick Cave Responds (April 2020. www.theredhandfiles.com/originality-hard-to-obtain/ ) "If I recall correctly, Warren wrote the chords and backing vocal line to this song. I just listened to Rising Signs‘ ‘Grey Man’ and it does sound pretty fucking similar. So, I phoned Warren, who is in lockdown in his studio in Paris, and asked him outright - “Did you steal ‘Palaces of Montezuma’ from Rising Signs?” “Fuck, no!” he says, “I stole it from The Laughing Clowns.” {Insert: <kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmfddIOan9Jnp9U> } The great beauty of contemporary music, and what gives it its edge and vitality, is its devil-may-care attitude toward appropriation - everybody is grabbing stuff from everybody else, all the time. It’s a feeding frenzy of borrowed ideas that goes toward the advancement of rock music - the great artistic experiment of our era. Plagiarism is an ugly word for what, in rock and roll, is a natural and necessary - even admirable - tendency, and that is to steal. Theft is the engine of progress, and should be encouraged, even celebrated, provided the stolen idea has been advanced in some way. To advance an idea is to steal something from someone and make it so cool and covetable that someone then steals it from you. In this way, modern music progresses, collecting ideas, and mutating and transforming as it goes. But a word of caution, if you steal an idea and demean or diminish it, you are committing a dire crime for which you will pay a terrible price - whatever talents you may have will, in time, abandon you. If you steal, you must honour the action, further the idea, or be damned. So, ‘Deanna’ is based on ‘Oh Happy Day’, and the solo in the middle of ‘Red Right Hand’ may well have been stolen from ‘Bedazzled’, and ‘Tupelo’ leans heavily on John Lee Hooker’s song by the same name, and the theme from ‘The Road’ sounds like the arpeggio work of Arvo Pärt, and the guitar riff in ‘Nobody’s Baby Now’ probably came straight out of a Van Morrison tune and, well, ‘Palaces of Montezuma’, it turns out, is based on a song by The Laughing Clowns, and so it goes - ideas, beautiful ideas, in full flow. Even though the influences may seem obvious, each of these songs, I think, has its own ingenuity, its own value and its own meaning. We musicians all stand on the shoulders of each other, our pirate pockets rattling with booty, our heads exploding with repurposed ideas. “What else have you stolen?” I ask Warren. “Everything,” he says, “Absolutely, everything.” Love, Nick"

There are some similarities to the great Grinderman song. But if Nick copied it, which I don't believe, he took the best parts e.g. the whoa humming at the beginning, and left the terrible, generic stuff to be sung by these original fellas...

That is sheer crap that Cave stole from you, when I pick up my acoustic guitar and play a DCG progression, then hum or sing over it, it sounds exactly like this song albeit in a different key. Fundamental melody, basic harmony with chord progression. It is repeated from every bedroom from Armenia to Uzbekistan. How many times did John Lennon hum this melody before writing a Beatles song. Lyrics? Don't get me started
