Hi Mr. Isuru, I'm a final year engineering undergraduate (not a civil engineering undergraduate though) who has a dream of building a house. I completely understand the importance of doing a structural analysis before starting the constructions of a building. But my question is how practical it is in Sri Lanka to build the house exactly according to the plan? Because the constructions are done by masons. Are they usually going to follow the plan exactly? or for that to happen do an engineer have to supervise them continuously? Will there be any bad consequences (a possibility of a structure failure) if the structural plan is not followed to the finest detail as proposed by the structural engineer? Thank you!

You can find skilled Masons who can read and understand the structural drawings in Sri Lanka. There are plenty of them. If you need some contacts I can give you many. The other thing is for ordinary type basic architectural designs and single story houses, I don't see an engineers requirement that much. But for modern type architectural designs there are many critical elements and situations. Ensuring the strength and Optimizing the materials cannot be done by an ordinary mason. For sure, you need to consult a structural engineer. After getting done a structural design and drawings, it is not needed to supervise it daily. The Engineer should involve in the special occasions such as prior to concreting the beams and slabs. Any change should be informed to the engineer. We can see many defects in houses which were build without the Engineers consultancy. They vary from minor wall cracks to Entire building tilt. So don't take that as a basic issue.

@@CivilEngineeringChannel Thank you for the detailed answer. If you can provide me some contacts of such masons that would be amazing. And another quick question. Are there any organisations that provide structural engineering consultancy for modern housing projects?
