my teacher asked me to read a random English book and I chose the pearl based on Chat gpt's suggestion. but when i opened the first page, i realized that the vocab level of this book would be in C1 and i'm just in level B1 :(((( luckily i found this audiobook, which has vietnamese subtitles for me to understand the book more easily

Hi, I noticed that the title of the audiobook playlist says "Peal" instead of "Pearl." just wanted to let you know--thanks for posting this!

I always love the dialogue cause it’s said with an emotion I cannot grasp as a human being. Flat yet so??? Funny??? I love it. I ADORE it. “Who😢” “Kino!😒” The “hush, I am a man, hush” bit said with ZERO difference from the rest of the dialogue nor with demand makes me LOVE this guy. I wish I was him

Jesus. All the students in these comments who are "too lazy" to read a book with less than 30000 words in it is highly disconcerting, especially since so many of you are STILL struggling to keep up with it in audio form. Any able-minded 13 year old should be able to piss through this in 90 minutes, understand what's happening the entire time, and immediately detect the book's theme by the end of it. By the looks of it, it seems to be a point of pride for some of you; that you are functionally incapable of completing this very simple academic task without the use of technology that has only been readily available for about 15 years. And you younger generations *earnestly* wonder why anyone who is even margainally older than you thinks you're all stupid.

I just read this book for the first time and I did enjoy it but ---- spoiler coming ---- the ending doesn't make sense to me. Why does the couple return to town at the end? Why are they allowed to? They spend half the book running away from a town where they're wanted for murder and then at the end they just go back. No confrontation, no explanation. How does that work? And why on earth would they go back to town when they were already so far from home and malnourished (and closer to the next city) AND they had just successfully killed the 3 men who were trailing them. I understand their son died and "the pearl is evil" etc but why turn around at that point? Did I miss something?

When they return home, they fully accept the consequences of doing that. Not just the murder that took place before fleeing, but also having a busted canoe and a burnt down house. You don't get to know the consequences of the murder, just as you don't get to know the consequences of them being unemployed and homeless. It's up to you to decide how the town is realistically going to handle the situation. As for the notion that it doesn't make sense to return since they came so far, killed three people, and were already malnourished; there's one important thing you need to remember. When Quino tells the townspeople what he's going to do with the money, he mentions that he's going to get married, buy a rifle, and get his son an education. One of those three things is evidently most important to him, and it's the last one. When he goes to sleep, he dreams of coyotito learning to read. When he looks into the pearl, he sees coyotito reading. In both of these instances, neither the wedding nor the rifle come up. With that being said, you can safely assume that, without the existence of his son, it not even worth going to the capital to sell the pearl for a higher price. If he can't buy his child an education, then he might as well have just sold it to the brokers in his hometown who were purposely underselling him. I hope this makes sense.
