What is your go to for OTTB hoof care just rescued a 9 yr old gelding and I took his shoes off and I’m not riding or working him just light ground work but the terrain alone is better softer but will give him some strength building as far as up and down and hills with grazing but just want his feet to grow and get healthy

Will this apply to a horse that is forward by nature? My mare seeks to go along faster even while I try to practice collection and then we end up miscommunicating on the end goal
@RetrainingOTTBsbyEquineRacers Жыл бұрын
Is your horse pulling on your hands the entire time or does she give to the bit? If she is pulling the entire time she is running through your hands, she’ll also have a hollow back. You will need to teach her to give to the bit and lighten up, then control her speed so she sits more on her haunches then you can get the collection. If she is hollow and running through your hands, you will get that “fake” inverted type of collection. If you want to send me a video of you riding her, I could better help. OTTB's are trained to push into pressure. I've learned so much with my own OTTB! Ground work has made a huge difference esp establishing myself as lead mare. I've learned mine does best with a gentle touch.

What's your thought on Spurs for sticky feet ie ask with a squeze first second with a little spur? I have an OTTB with sticky feet!! Ugh
@EquineRacers3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the horse, however in my experience the Spurs led to more sour behavior and resulted in kicking out or bucking. I found the spinning them in circles makes them have no choice but to move, is much harder work for the horse then actually going forward, and doesn’t allow them the ability to buck or kick out. Make the wrong thing hard (spinning in circles) and the right thing easy (going forward), that is the trick. Horses always look for the easier way.

Have you used underwood? My horse got a pretty bad gash in its leg at the knee and the vet highly recommended it.

You can take the horse out of the race, but it can take a while to get the race out of the horse. Personally, I've seen a lot of ottbs take well to polo. It's a strenuous activity for horses with lots of energy, and also keeps their mind engaged with the more complex rules and training.

Is it more affordable then the original ?
@RetrainingOTTBsbyEquineRacers3 жыл бұрын
It’s still comparable price to the leather saddles. I really liked this model and would consider it as a second saddle for sure.

That horse has had nowhere near enough ground work/work in hand. Flexion /softening takes time but must be achieved as does getting the horse into the correct frame. Short cuts will make the whole process take longer.
@RetrainingOTTBsbyEquineRacers3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct. This horse at the time of the video has only been here a very short time. It’s all a work in progress that is developed over time. Thanks for watching and commenting.
