My experience has been that alpine strawberries (I have grown several varieties) grown in anything less than full sun grow great plants but have NO TASTE. When I moved them to full sun the next year, they grew sweet strawberries. Even partial shade resulted in tasteless fruit. They don't taste bad. They have no taste at all. If all you want is ground cover and pretty fruit, you can grow them in partial shade. If you plan to eat them, I recommend full sun.

This is the FIRST video I've seen about growing them from seeds!!! I just ordered tree collard seeds today 1/29/2017. I don't know if they will be true seeds...but I am excited to see if I can grow what I'm sent. Can you do an update on this video?

A few weeks ago I found a small forgotten white alpine strawberry plant at my local nursery and brought it home, and it's my new favourite plant! It's going gangbusters with very little care, and seems super prolific so far. They're only small but the fruit have such an amazing taste too; I really wasn't expecting it. Now I'm busy trying to plant and grow as many of them as I can! :P

+hellbendert35 My husband grows these for us to eat. We leave the plants out all year just as they would be in the wild. The only difference is that we place our pots in a raised bed with a net around it to keep critters out. The leaves get green again even in winter. I am zone 6.

Hi there Pammy I don't know if know if you check these postings but I have the same NORTH AIMING BALCONY situation, although mine seems a little big bigger than yours and I can tell you I have had success growing my varieties of peppers, tomatoes and now I began experimenting with garlic, parsley, cilantro, 3 citrus, a passion fruit vine, and believe it or not my Pear and Apple plants are growing gorgeous, I must tell you that I boost them with several LED lights outdoors. I do can tell you, plants take more time to grow and fruits take longer to mature (and they are smaller in size if your variety are the bigger ones) but with TLC they will give you TLC back. My tomates grew a little bit bigger than a golf ball). Anyways, I do have a question for you...Do you have those 3 to 4 hours of direct light all year round...???? I am in NW Miami, FL and I only have some sun streaks late spring to late summer, a few rays in the morning, some others in the morning. Let me know, I got hook a year ago in this gardening hobby.!!!

I've read a LOT about this plant. The only thing more impressive than this plant is your determination to grow it. They may NOT be true-to-seed. So what? That could be to your advantage. Judging from your results, I believe you might have stumbled on an improved variety. I would LOVE see an update video on these. We (here in the US) might be lining up to get some of YOUR cuttings. lol

If you have a problem with powdery mildew again, I've found that if there's only a little bit, I can get rid of it be regularly spraying both sides of the affected leaves with chamomile tea, which is anti-fungal.

Your balcony must be enormous for all these seeds lol. Thanks for the video! I think a lot of people face the same problem with light by living in an apartment. I have orchids I'm trying to create artificial lightening indoors for. I can't wait to see your updates!

Could you possibly share how often you pollinated the flowers after they bloomed? Is once enough for each flower? Also, love your videos! They're super helpful and I'm glad I found a collection that touch on aspects of gardening that I'm curious about. Thanks!

I'm impressed by your balcony garden. I have a balcony of similar size with better light (although it's not transparent like yours, cutting down the light directly behind the front) and I put my little standup greenhouses up there, some pots and even plan to grow my potatoes up there this year in grow bags. I am also fortunate that the edges of the balcony are wide and can accomodate pots, these get all day sun on both sides. I grew alpines last year - they grew prolifically but I overplanted (you should have seen how root bound they were when I composted them!) but I have to say for me, not worth the effort as the strawberries were tiny and the flavour wasn't great. Could have been my cultivar. I'm going to try Temptation this year (from seed), which is an "alpine" one technically but with size/shape and taste of more regular strawberries without the runners. I'm going to put 3 plants in each of two troughs and then try some interspersed in the garden too.

There are red aphids. Soap & water will help control them. Milk and water does the trick for powdery mildew for me. If you put sand on top of the dirt in your planter it will keep fungus gnats from breading. Hydrogen peroxide and water mix will kill living fungus gnats. FYI, If you are interested in building your subscriber # at a much greater pace, putting yourself in front of the camera will make your channel take off. You have really great content on your videos but people on KZbin want to connect with a other people. I guess it makes what we are telling them more believable? My channel never really took off until I made it personal by getting in front of the camera! For what its worth to you? I am a subscriber for the life of your channel no matter how you choose to do it though! Chuck
