I think that he is demonstrating how force is evenly distributed throughout objects when it is applied. The force of the hammer could easily send the nail throughout the body and pierce the skin. But if the same force strikes a board of 100 nails or more, then each of those nails had to share the force. Since, the force is spread out, it is not that dangerous and is no longer lethal. The more nails touching his body, the more places the force has to distribute to, and the less powerful the force feels on the receiving end. Furthermore, it only applies to the nails that actually are making contact with the body of this student. Since, pressure=force/ surface area and he were to put his forearm between the boards then his arm will most likely get pierced. As the arm will only make contact with a dozen of nails.
