A little history: Sultan Osman in 1453 captured Constantinople (ending the Byzantine Empire), renamed it to Istanbul, and set it up as the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Now, after 1918’s Armistice of Mudros, the Ottoman Empire shrank down as punishment for the Armenian Genocide of WW1. Turkey’s capital became Ankara as it was centred around it but in 1922, Turkey expanded again. Even still, they chose Ankara as the capital.
