This video makes a lot more sense if you read her book first. Besides talking about her music career, she gets so into discussing her family and home that you would be lost not knowing names and places she throws out. On the other hand, this relaxed community center chat with all of her personality nuances is a good enhancement to what can’t be communicated in printed words of the book alone. To bad the book didn’t come with this video on DVD on the last page.

Victor Garber wrote a book? lol. All kidding aside, the easy availability of facts (by those who choose to seek facts) and the easiness of travel pretty much explains his comment about how novelists are factchecked and corrected for moving an event that happened in Place X to Place Y. In the 1800s the Brontes would not have written about Russia or would've relied on secondhand accounts inevitably getting some places/events wrong and a reader of theirs in Nebraska certainly had never been abroad so he/she wouldn't know any better. Now, billions of people have been around to exotic places and have access to the internet so perhaps that WOULD make them a little more demanding of the novelist. Even funnier is how novelists now have to adapt to technology and run the risk of their novels being outdated in 10 yrs. Imagine now coming across a passage where the hero's beeper goes off and has to look for a pay phone! Not easy writing a novel.

It amazes me how many things people could get accomplished back in the day. I know it’s because they didn’t have all of these electronic distractions. I romanticize these days sometimes.

Wow. I'm watching this 5 years later. It's a wonderful documentation of historical significance because Carly Simon is a beloved singer and an important artist. Her singing voice is unique and incredible. She is also a very interesting person. This is a real gem of a video. The sound quality is good. The visual could have been more close up. But it was a wonderful event and I'm deeply grateful it was captured for posterity, as it should be with things so that many, many people can derive from it other than just those lucky enough to be in the room at those moments in time. I love how Sally honored her mother at the end. She could have said even more. Carly is so authentic. She has big honesty genes that just can't be transmuted. I'm so glad she left that first editor. Carly seems to have so much pain about James Taylor but I'm sure deep down inside he loves her. The audience member comments added so much to the proceedings. This was a wonderful capturing of Carly Simon. I loved how Carly cried. The writing in her book is beautiful. I am going to go buy the book. It was great to hear Carly speak of her mother so lovingly, despite all the complexities. This video is a treasure.

I read Carly Simon’s book Boys in the Trees, and I loved it. I was addicted to the book because I’m such a huge fan of Carly Simon’s work. My favorite picture from the book is of Carly Simon standing on the front porch steps of the house she shared with her first husband James Taylor and the caption said “Skylight, James?”.

Wonderful discussion. Amor is such an artist who plans, plots and designs his books for years before actually writing. I love his watching a Chekov play example to illustrate his approach to writing. Masterful.

Billy Collins has the perfect comic delivery in his banter. Reminds me of Bob Newhart. And the poems are wonderful, too.

Though I know that the awful electric light above Billy's head should be a halo, I'll allow his denial that he is an angel as long as he is willing to admit that he is the best poet living.

Two Memorial Days I went on a trip to Eugene, Oregon. The AirBnb I stayed at had a copy of Everybody's Fool. I had never heard of Richard Russo. I'm so glad I discovered his works and have read multiple of his books now. And as for the interviewer, he seems to have continued to do quite well for himself as well. I recently read A Gentleman In Moscow, loved it, and see it's a mini-series on TV as well. Thanks for the video.

A gorgeous and insightful book with one of the most the most wonderful 3 dimensional protagonist I can think of… created by Amor Towles - I only wish Count Rostov weren’t fictional. Amor Towles is a true pleasure to listen to- so captivating.

Where's the Neurosis? How can one so Organized be Con Amor y Sin Amor? The novelist as an Inverted (Perverted?) Therapist? Hmmm. Actually there was an Eve in Hollywood, but she was born there. Ms Eve Babitz. The location of the lecture gives the audience away. It's a room full of Mid-Life MBA's n' Lawyers experiencing Controlled Breakdowns. Like Martha Stewart on Roller Skates.

Bill Styron’s book on depression was pivotal for me in my own experience of depression. I think it spoke to many people. Thanks again for such an outstanding conversation!! What a gift!! 🎁
