Glad to see this interview with Randy.! Randy has helped me with several purchases and sales of my vintage boards. A month ago I sent him a '65 Jacobs Lance Carson shaped by Lance. So, happy that special board is in his hands awaiting restoration. And I am so pleased to know Randy, even though we have never met in person. A quality guy and a true historian of our wonderful sport.

I met Randy a long time age here in Texas with his brother in law, Michael Boyd. Good times.

All board builders are awesome and have my respect but in my opinion Ben Aipa is by far one of the most important and influential surfboard shapers of all time and may he rest in peace. Almost all modern boards I see have some piece of Ben’s influence in them. I feel like he is pinnacle of innovation in board building. Every shaper should strive to be innovative to a point where almost all other shapers use their special inventions and techniques and tricks to make boards better.

STOP IT!!!! You guys got PAID in BAGS FULL of leafy product and white powder, for DECADES!! Remember that until 90's Surfing was a "fringe" sport for burners n hippie non-work or little work types.. Jeff Spicoli types who really had to think hard about "gas money" or "weed money". Surfboards HAD to stay cheap. Hell the Credit Card hadn't even been invented, much less available to surfing types...

I bought an Exodus board in 1996 from Chris at PLNC. There were some very good surfers there. Great people too. I cannot remember exactly the logo but it was B&W with "EXODUS" in a cloudy thick black font and a cross on it. I forgot where he was selling them out of. Maybe OB, can't remember. Funny I stumbled onto this pod. Cheers gentlemen.

Body weight divided by 6 = pro level volume. Add a few liters depending upon fitness and ability and intended board type.

I was in the “shortboard and rip” camp for so long. It was life changing to get on a 6’7” CI TPH single. Just slowed me down, made me realize the importance of foot placement and line selection. The ease of paddle in and the glide. I’m now firmly in the “ ride everything “ camp, and having a proper board and fin quiver. When the intended attitude matches with board and conditions, it’s a whole new dimension and experience. My recommendation to everyone is play and have fun. Buy used boards and experiment.
