I recently got the Volca Drum too and yes - it can be rather daunting. However, I was recommended the book “Volca Drum - Experts Guide” by Tony Horgan. It is a good walkthrough of the function, but what (to me) really added value is the chapter where he has written out different sounds like “Short kick”, “Cowbell” etc. It is neatly documented, easy to understand and a good way to get going. I found the book at a very decent price as Apple Books. (Greetings from a fellow Norwegian!)

I have only just gotten the Volca Drum, and keep getting surprised at the sounds it can make. (Just got the MS-70CDR+ as well.) They are gonna play nice with my Roland S-1. 🙂 Thanks for the tip about the tempo change using Global Parameters!

I think so, in theory, but I haven't been able to figure it out myself. But you can adjust the swing, and de-activate steps in the sequencer. Tony Horgan shows how to get a 6/8 rhythm here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3mze6uji92oY5o

good vid. Drum is the best...well, drum machine of the Volca series IMO. Beats is way too limited. and Kick is even more so. i use Drum mostly for high hat and it's splicing feature. but i know you can probably get great snare from it. but, like you, i don't mess with the sound design too much.
@MilesJams6 ай бұрын
Thank you! ❤ I'm guessing you mean slicing, and not splicing? It definitely seems like the most versatile Volca drum machine, and I'm guessing it would compare favorably to other non-Korg drum machines at a similar price range.

You should! It's a lot of fun to experiment with. If nothing else, you can just keep using the randomize functions until you hit gold. 🥇
@danieloberhoff16 ай бұрын
its quite peculiar, but it has these sounds that nicely punch through a mix and add excitement imho, so for me its more a percussion element. that and the simple sine drums punch so hard...useful for that "in your face" punch :)
@MilesJams6 ай бұрын
Interestingly, another user recently commented (on one of the my jam videos) that the drums on the drum were too weak, and didn't work well in mixes with other volca units... ! Seemed to be because it's digital, and not analog. I don't have enough experience to tell the difference, but I like it a lot - peculiarities and all.
@danieloberhoff16 ай бұрын
@@MilesJamsi think on their own as an only drum machine i kinda agree. Its not versatile enough. I mean if it works for your music cool, but in general no. But as an additional percussive element its gold imho
@danieloberhoff16 ай бұрын
its a drum synth, not a "normal" drum machine, so you should be familiar with synths, but sure, more knobs always helps :)
@MilesJams6 ай бұрын
When in doubt, add more knobs! Thank you for pointing it out, hadn't even considered the difference; it's a li'l machine that is made to make drum sounds ergo "drum machine", had been my thinking.

The drum is the least Volca sounding of the Volca’s IMHO, had o e and found it a bit lightweight sounding and didn’t fit in the mix amongst other volcas.

Sorry to hear that! I don't own enough Volcas to tell. Guessing the sound isn't sufficiently "big" or "punchy" when put next to the others?
