This scene where the nazis try to search for the Von Trapp makes me feel anxious because it makes me feel that if that was to happened to me l would be scared thinking I would never have my own freedom. I’m glad the Captain and his family found their way to Freedom by having to leave what they loved behind them to have a better life

@12classics39 Жыл бұрын
In the play, Rolf does not blow the whistle when he realizes the family is there. He locks eyes with Liesl and straight-up lies to the Nazis saying “nobody’s out here!” Interesting how the screenwriter Ernest Lehman changed this for the film to have Rolf directly betray them with the whistle.

When Captain Von Trapp asked Mother Abbess for their caretaker's car, she said it would be no use to them. Before Rolfe found them, he came from the stairs where the family escaped. From then on, I started to think that Rolfe may be the abbey's caretaker and he knew all along that Mother Abbess took them there to hide.

That scene is probably at least three times as long in the movie as in the play (and, no, it doesn't just *feel* longer because of the suspense, they added more details to the search in the movie and that makes it longer). We still should be able to *see* them when they're hiding in the play. My opinion, anyway.

I just saw part of one on KZbin where in (that version of) the stage play we cannot see them when they are hiding. I need to be able to see them. But the Nazis don't. It's a significantly more powerful scene when we can see them.

Imagine what would happen if the Captain, Maria, or one of the kids all of a sudden sneezed very fast out loud as the lieutenant was checking gate by gate where the lieutenant would probably say "Captain Von Trapp, we know you're in there after hearing that sneeze and we're not leaving." Especially I'm sure maybe the lieutenant would have told the two Nazis to guard the gate and then maybe he would have gotten a hacksaw to cut the bars open while maybe one Nazi points his gun inside to make everyone come out and the other Nazi has his gun out making sure the nuns stay away.

@@julistarling8382 I agree, it would be scary. Those were still great hiding spots since the gates were locked and they were hiding behind those metal signs and they were okay as long as none of them made a sound which they didn't.

I had to act this scene out as a child in a rather big production of the sound of music. I played marta (the second youngest). The production made it look and feel so real. Each night the way we would be caught by rolf would be slightly improv. Sometimes i would have my foot grabbed as a result of it hanging out, but it made it all the more real. i as a young child, found it hard to seperate the different realities. I ACTUALLY BELIEVED we were hiding from the nazis. It was incredibly terrifying but exhilarating.
@julistarling83822 жыл бұрын
That must have been an incredible experience. And I cannot help wondering if any of the child actors in the movie ever felt that way too. Acting can feel very, very real sometimes.
@julistarling83822 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that if I was ever lucky enough to be in it, in the part that feels dangerous I would be saying to myself "this is for the real Trapp family and for thankfulness for their safety and that they escaped without ever having to go through a scene like this one". That scene makes me feel slightly nervous just *thinking* about it. Probably more so if I were ever to be *in* it.
@julistarling83822 жыл бұрын
This is played so real that you can get worried about them even when you've seen it 100 times and you *know* they escape. One of the very most powerful scenes in the whole thing. You know these were all good actors because they can play all different kinds of emotions in one film. Also. Remember when the kids were scared in the thunderstorm? Which is what Gretl is probably alluding to with her line about the song. This time the danger is more real. So many different levels in one movie.

Nicholas Hammond, who played Friedrich, remembered that despite his youth and lack of experience compared to seasoned professionals Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, it was their intensity and commitment to the scene that inspired him to approach the scene with equal intensity and remember “this IS life or death; that flashlight cannot touch one hair on our heads.”
@MrJamieMurph41419697 ай бұрын
That’s probably exactly what would have happened, if anyone had sneezed, thereby betraying themselves(with absolutely NO WAY to bench press their way out of it!) As I just said in another comment, it must have been almost like hiding from the police in a way(as they were equally scared shitless), only they hadn’t done anything wrong. On the contrary, it’s like the other way around, as it’s the BADDIES whom they’re hiding from!!! (and not the authorities!)
