Worst game of hide and seek IS RIGHT!!!! Scared shitless; almost like trying to hide from the police, only it’s the BADDIES they’re hiding from!(not that they’re wanted by the authorities.)

In the play, Rolf does not blow the whistle when he realizes the family is there. He locks eyes with Liesl and straight-up lies to the Nazis saying “nobody’s out here!” Interesting how the screenwriter Ernest Lehman changed this for the film to have Rolf directly betray them with the whistle.

That was in defiance of Captain Von Trapp taking away his pistol and jeering at him, "You'll never be one of them."

In real world terms... "This is reality."

@@julistarling8382 I agree, it would be scary. Those were still great hiding spots since the gates were locked and they were hiding behind those metal signs and they were okay as long as none of them made a sound which they didn't.

That must have been an incredible experience. And I cannot help wondering if any of the child actors in the movie ever felt that way too. Acting can feel very, very real sometimes.

I was thinking that if I was ever lucky enough to be in it, in the part that feels dangerous I would be saying to myself "this is for the real Trapp family and for thankfulness for their safety and that they escaped without ever having to go through a scene like this one". That scene makes me feel slightly nervous just *thinking* about it. Probably more so if I were ever to be *in* it.

This is played so real that you can get worried about them even when you've seen it 100 times and you *know* they escape. One of the very most powerful scenes in the whole thing. You know these were all good actors because they can play all different kinds of emotions in one film. Also. Remember when the kids were scared in the thunderstorm? Which is what Gretl is probably alluding to with her line about the song. This time the danger is more real. So many different levels in one movie.

@@paulmacartney8266 That's true if the Captain, Maria, or one of the kids sneezed very fast out loud, the lieutenant would say "Captain Von Trapp, we know you're in there after hearing that sneeze and we're not leaving." Then the lieutenant would have gotten a hacksaw to cut the bars open while the two Nazis were guarding the gate and then they would have taken their guns out to make everyone come out. If that happened, they could only hope that Rolfe would bail them out since he said he was going to shoot the Captain but, was too scared to shoot him while the Captain tried inviting him to come to Switzerland with them.

Nicholas Hammond, who played Friedrich, remembered that despite his youth and lack of experience compared to seasoned professionals Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, it was their intensity and commitment to the scene that inspired him to approach the scene with equal intensity and remember “this IS life or death; that flashlight cannot touch one hair on our heads.”

That’s probably exactly what would have happened, if anyone had sneezed, thereby betraying themselves(with absolutely NO WAY to bench press their way out of it!) As I just said in another comment, it must have been almost like hiding from the police in a way(as they were equally scared shitless), only they hadn’t done anything wrong. On the contrary, it’s like the other way around, as it’s the BADDIES whom they’re hiding from!!! (and not the authorities!)
