Just watched you video from a month ago. Saw that you left the water on the potted fig trees for quite a while... deep watering I'm guessing? How often do you water? I'm in St George, Utah 8a with high 80's to low 90's the last few weeks. A few leaves got sunburned on a younger fig tree (cutting was planted last October) so I've shaded that one & others getiing sunburned a little more. I am watering the top/middle daily as it dries out even with cedar mulch & deep water when needed. I am getting a lot of fig rust... sprinklers hit the leaves 3 times a day for 3 days a week. Sorry, I'm new. Any help is appreciated.

I do a single deep watering a day, and 2 on days over 105 degrees. Foiler watering spreads rust, this is why i water at the root ball. All young leaves will stress at first, but as they wither they will be replaced by new acclimatized ones. I also water when the sun is off the trees. (Early morning and evening) Proper drainage is required for daily deep watering and compaction will occur, but i repot and loosen soil yearly. We are not so different from fig trees, sometimes we struggle as we acclimate to adversity, but our own deep watering will sustain us if we are patient and willing to do the work to adapt and grow. Your trees will achieve strength. Keep with it.

@TheBigTurbowski I'm using Fox Farm Happy Frog potting soil & I added composted manure to the top surface. It seems to stay moist according to a moisture tool. Leaves never droop, pots stay very heavy... if I do the quick water around the trunk each day. Seems like the old potting mix dries out faster. So should I have added more perlite for better drainage? Or what potting mix do you use? Your Fig trees look Amazing. Thanks for the reply. I totally agree about acclimating & adapting.

@@MatthewsFabrication i make my own mix from native topsoil, compost and wood chip mulch, the mulch is inoculated with fungi and then i put mulch on too of the trees, thats all i do. i fertilize with fish emulsion or compost tea once a week. As for compaction, the soil type here seems to drain fine on its own so im afraid i can be no help there. When i used to use perlite i noticed the soil seemed to shed water more quickly and was a detriment in the hot months. The earth doesn’t worry about compaction so i don’t either. If a single dandelion can push two cement blocks apart, im sure nature can push roots through a little hard dirt. Maybe substitute some loamy material? Go look at the forest floor, that is what i try to recreate when i mix my own dirt. I hope that was if some help.

Thanks. I have 2 in ground and one in a pot. Hate having to water the potted one every day for very few figs. But I have never repotted it. Will give that a try. Located in Lawrence.
