I would think that to free both hands you could hang/tie a weight of some sort to the drill press handle to hold pressure on the die. The amount of weight, of course, would vary depending on the circumstance. Good video. Thank You...

My breaks work with the truck controller but not when I pull the pin so weird
@SyEnsability
@SyEnsability Жыл бұрын
I agree, that sounds weird. If it is wired correctly, the trailer brakes should come on hard when the pin is pulled. At that point it should not matter if the brake controller in your truck is sending a signal or not.

It’s a poor design…you want to load each torsion independently for the benefit of a dual axle torsion setup. This might be better if you in the habit of jump curbs…maybe Load it, and this design is not as good as a standard setup, cost more, and much more prone to failure and suspension wear.
@SyEnsability
@SyEnsability Жыл бұрын
Yes, it costs a little more - and gives a nicer ride. This one has a lot of miles, with all sorts of loads. For those that drink the typical independent tandem torsion Kool-Aid, I suggest a good look at the physics. Torsions are wonderful as a single axle, but without extra mechanics, create problems when combined. Perhaps this article will help: mechanicalelements.com/torsion-axles-in-tandem-or-triple/

Hex dies are not made for cutting new threads. Only for repair for damage threads. That's why it took a lot to cut those threads and you probably payed 5.00 for that die. A round die that is HSS will cut smooth threads and is about five times the price as a hex die and will cut much easier.

Dear _SE,_ That's a scary video. I can't imagine the weight put on that single tire. But even if the front and middle tires followed the rear tire down to the pavement (no gap between any tire and the road), how could we tell if there is actually any decent weight distribution between all three tires? In this instance, the rear tire could still be taking all the load, with only springs and gravity forcing the front and middle tires to (barely) touch the pavement? In other words, whether the front and middle tires touch the road or not, how would we know they are taking any of the trailer's weight?

Get video of it if you can, by mounting a camera under it. Take it to a trailer parts / repair shop and ask them. If the mechanic looks at you with a blank stare, take it someplace else. You need somebody that knows what he's doing, and that's not super common. RV places are not the first choice. Good luck.

Good example of what happens but I wouldn't worry about it. This is just basic stuff the axle, tire and trailer manufacturers are aware of. The load ratings are rated for a continuous load in a variety of driving environments with rocks, bumps, pot holes, u-turns, ranges of temperature etc etc. These wheel off the ground scenarios only happen at slow speed in parking lots and driveways.
@SyEnsability
@SyEnsability Жыл бұрын
That's what dealers say, and many people are happy with the setup. Yet, those reassuring words are of little comfort when stranded on the road side, or to the person that just replaced tires and bearings for the 3rd time. As a trailer engineer I see the failure side of this too often. It doesn't mean all will break tomorrow, but if you tow, it is something to be aware of. You are right, it works for many. However, multiple unlinked axles are directionality incorrect in terms of stress and safety. That's the point of the video. Best of luck to you!

As a trailer engineer a normal spring ride suspension doesn't distribute either. You need a tandem walking beam or air ride (as long as you keep the height of axles level with each other).

Ya we have 16 trailers , triple axles with torsion. No problems at all with heavy loads going off road. The only trailers that make noise and I worry about ,have slipper suspension. This trailer in this video is poorly built junk and has nothing to do with the axles
@chomp54321
@chomp54321 2 жыл бұрын
You should not have included the tongue weight, which changes depending on how you load the trailer. You can use it to judge if you've balanced your load properly, but it does not contribute in any way to the trailer's total weight.
@ericdavi1231
@ericdavi1231 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with this, I have a tandem 12,000 boat trailer with torsion axles. I've had to replace all of the original 10 ply tires with 14 ply tires because they were all becoming deformed. But for a marine environment, I'll still take torsion axles over leaf springs. As for the bearings, the salt water kills my brakes every few years no matter how well I keep them rinsed off and sprayed down with fluid film. I usually throw new bearings in when I have to tear down the brakes.

If it's not symmetric, measure both sides. Or, Everything has a Center of Mass. Get under it and lift the whole thing. But, sometimes you can't get under things, so this method is not practical. It's not the end-all solution, just a hack that can help in the right situation.

@SyEnsability
@SyEnsability 2 жыл бұрын
Good observation. It depends on the capability of your equipment. Here, the holes are not that big so starter holes are not necessary. I do use this technique with large holes also. In that case, use the large drill, but only drill deep enough to get good center marks. Then I go back, using those marks to drill a smaller hole and then drill to size.

How about the Torsion Stress this applies to the Beam section of the Torsion Axle. The Square Tube in the Beam is not designed to twist. Say you cross the load equalizer through a ditch like section, front right in full compression and left rear in full compression, that twist FAR exceeds the design of a Static Axle Tube. Torsion Axles are designed so the Flange mounted to a static load takes the full load and twist while the connecting Beam from one side to the other is only there to keep the Camber and Caster of the wheels in line.
@SyEnsability
@SyEnsability 2 жыл бұрын
Good eye. You are absolutely correct if the axles were rigidly mounted to the rocking beams. They are not. While the tube does take some torque, it is mitigated by flexibility in the attachment. That said, there are limits. If it was set up with too much rocking freedom, it would be just as you describe. Thanks for the comment.
