I made two trips in the mid and late 70s and then again in the mid 90s with same troop and same Scoutmaster He would never take us to Philmont. Said “It’s one long portage”. Trips of a lifetime

Good film, 1969 was my first time in the BWCAW. I am packing right now for my next adventure to that great country. I have missed eight summers since 1969.

Great to see the people enjoying their adventure back in the old days. They were recreating the old days before them. But I must admit that todays modern gear looks a heap more comfortable and easier to manage, even though it is still something that most people don’t get the privilege to participate in such an inspiring activity.

I can hear every sound in this video as though I were living it, and there's only music. Camping is wonderful.

I wonder how their lives ended up……1942 was in the heat of WW2 with Korea not too many years later. The last few generations have had it good……..now they’re throwing it away in favor of Communist ideology.

I paddled out of the Chas Sommers canoe base in the mid-1960's. I was a kid from Kansas who had never been in a canoe. Today I am 72 and live in Maine. That short time in BWCA set my life upon a love of the north woods. I've been back to BWCA once but have paddled rivers all over northern North America including the Yukon Territory, northern Quebec and many more great destinations. I've also devoted a big chunk of my retirement to conserving the North Maine Woods as a Board member and Board Chair of the Forest Society of Maine. That trip in the mid-1960's was so critical to my life. I can't thank the Boy Scouts of America enough for creating and maintaining such a wonderful place.

Luckily it is still around, now known as Northern Tier High Adventure, the Boy Scouts of America's oldest national high adventure base. This year is the 100th anniversary!

Canoe camping is the best! Easy to build in plywood for a very small cost and will tie-down on the family car. Endless fun and adventure with great family or individual memories! Cheers!
