The "latest' (cough, cough) social media cosmetic hack is Calamine Lotion as a primer/mattifier. My question is... how many damn times is this VERY unhealthy makeup hack going to resurface? KZbin beauty gurus promoted this Calamine Lotion makeup primer hack over a decade ago, and it destroyed people's skin barriers. It appears the hack has come roaring back, with TikTok beauty content creators promoting their latest "discovery." The hashtag #calamineprimer has over 3.5 million views on the social media platform. wtf? As the trend continues to gain momentum (again), dermatologists and makeup experts are warning about the possible long-term skin damage the hack presents (again). FACT Calamine Lotion is an astringent product and is highly alkaline (with a ph between 8-10). It was formulated to be a TARGETED treatment for oozing wounds (chickenpox) and to calm and heal insect bites, rashes, and poison ivy - not to be used as a makeup primer. Slathering a highly alkaline product all over your face as a primer/mattifier compromises the skin's barrier function (natural protection), and continued use can lead to permanent skin damage. Calamine Lotion as a facial primer/mattifier also exacerbates skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, and dermatitis. The viral hack is also creating a shortage, with people seeking the product for medical reasons saying it's becoming increasingly harder to find. I realize beauty creators must post new content regularly to keep their audience engaged and their channels successfully monetized... But can we PLEASE STOP promoting cosmetic hacks and DIYs that hurt people?
