I’m thinking about enlisting after I finish my masters degree, I’ll be around 30 once I finish. Does anyone think this is a good idea?
@felixferrin10904 ай бұрын
Do you have a Bachelor's Degree already? If so, I recommend seeing your local Officer Selection Officer (OSO) and getting into a commissioning program. You do not want to be an over 30-year-old LT. You can always get your Master's while on Active Duty. Officers go to Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS) and other Marine Corps University Courses that will award them a Master's at the end in Military Science.

As I recall, back in January of '68, (MCRD San Diego) it was less than 4 hours from the time we got off the buss till we were ushered over the the quonset huts. We had been showered, hair cuts and given our utilities after we shipped our personal things back home in a box. At 72 years old now, I do forget things for sure. But I can search my brain till exhaustion and I don't at all remember a SDI Speech. I only recall him saying as we stood at attention, "if I catch you eye-balling me, I will gouge your eyes out."

I remember picking-up my ditty bag in some warehouse on P.I. that they put everyone's shit in until we were done--however that was going to happen--it was weird when I got it back--I hadn't seen anything that was really mine for several months--all that Nike gym-bag had in it was my civilian clothes and personal effects. It's like jail, when they take your cell phone, keys and that lucky peseta you still have from Benidorm.

Spent 75-78 as a D.I. at Parris Island I co 3rd Bn..I watched lots of these videos from modern day and it’s disheartening. We didn’t give the candy ass speech. We went down and cut the recruits at the receiving barracks ran them out onto the yellow foot prints, force marched back to third battalion and laid hell on them. Not at this grab ass BS. Walk don’t run? It was full tilt from day one until they graduated. We’d pick up 80 in the summer and drop at least 20. In the winter we might pick up 48 or so and drop 15. It was so different. Was it better? I don’t know that but I’ll tell you one thing it was tougher, way tougher!!

I wish Marines wasn't a hard branch to get accepted at. I know they got high standards. I understand. I wish I would've gone to the Marines but talking about disqualifying me over a medical history. So instead I'm in the Army National Guard. I'm 28 almost passed the age limit. But no matter what, I give my highest and fullest respect to the hard core Marines. They are the toughest elite and the deadliest weapon in America. They are the best. I would never mess with a Marine or insult a Marine's intelligence. The Marines boot camp is way better than any other branch. Marines are better trained. The few the proud. Semper Fi Marines. God bless the Marines. OORAAH MARINE CORP!!

I remember that morning when we met the DIs in the speech the senior said ,we will instill discipline in you through pain.i got a little worry after hearing that.i got jacked up a few times, which is what they used to call back then to them grabbing you by your clothes and shaking you violently.when I left Parris island I wasn't afraid of a damn thing.Semper Fi.

I have watched this speech from several Marine DI’s and every time, it makes me want to become a Marine. It is a very inspiring speech to me coupled with the pomp and ceremony. Sadly I am way to old to do this now and when I was young I did not have my shit squared away enough to even think about being a Marine. I have the upmost respect for every Marine living and dead. I have known many Marines of many ages and found every single last one of them to be the best people you could know. God bless all Marines.

I don’t want any young person to read this and think their shit needs to be together before joining. Everyone is basically in the same boat. They put your shit together once you get their.
