Had this happened to me on santee cooper. Took my wife and daughter for their first time EVER in a lock. We locked down to the river from the lake and on oir way back up to the lake a few hours later this happened. Im assuming the lock master opened the valves to far because inside the lock turned into a washing machine. The back of my champion 203 started getting sucked down and was filling with water. The entire lock full of boats beat around, and one guy got his 250 proxs cowling busted all to pieces on the concrete walls. My wife swore she would never do it again. Ruined something that i thought they would enjoy

Thats just how those locks work. They just crack the door open and if floods in. Theres always a strong current. There were just way too many boats in there. Typically they only allow 4 or 5 at most and yiu have to be holding the rope
@JTV843 ай бұрын
really? they don't have sluice gates? i've never heard of a lock that works this way. how do they crack it open when the lock is empty and there's a few thousand tons of water holding the gate shut?
@MrTaylorfenoglio3 ай бұрын
@@JTV84 they don't. There is a dam where water is flowing to the side of it. So the gates are only regulating the water inside the lock itself. It cracks open then stops a little bit then completely opens after it equalizes a bit.
@JTV843 ай бұрын
@@MrTaylorfenoglio never seen a lock that works this way. the main gate is designed so that any difference in pressure holds it shut. the top gate will not open when the lock is empty, the bottom gate will not open when the lock is full.
@stevenjones6183 ай бұрын
@@JTV84 go to Mississippi River go to the Illinois River go to Lake michgan on the Chicago river.. almost all locks open a bit allows water.to flow then the less the difference the more they open.. but first rule in any lock i been in is must have life jacket all boats must be on wall and holding on to a rope or the slippery ladders... next all motors off.. no one is allowed to be in middle.. but I would think the lock master knew of tourny and thise guys said oh yeah no problem let's get 10 15 boats in there we be fine.. cause its about 1 hr turn around.. so this is the outcome typical
@JTV843 ай бұрын
@@stevenjones618 i live in england but i'll take your word for it. every lock i've been through has sluice gates which i think are built into the sides of the lock, under the water. everything else is the same. you still don't get too close to the front because of the strong currents.

When you lock through you’re going to a lake system that is higher or lower than the lake you’re coming from. They are going up looks like so the water fills the lock raising the boats up so they can go up” to the next lake. It’s like a water elevator

@Unwrenched3 жыл бұрын
On certain bodies of water, usually river systems they have locks. They locks let water from one part feed into the other body of water. The locks open and close on a daily schedule due to water levels and barge traffic. These guys were waiting for this particular lock to open.
