I dearly love this crazy late era Shaw movie. The actors are clearly having a ball with it, and Mary Jean Reimer (Jing-Jing Yung)'s character arc was a nice surprise--from spoiled comic relief to bad arse.

Thanks, very interesting topic. Any chance you could do a video on Jin Yong’s Sword Stained with Royal Blood and Flying Fox novels along with their adaptations? Or on Burning of the Red Lotus Temple (1928) and the various remakes (Temple of the Red Lotus & Burning Paradise)? You’re making the wuxia stories very easy to understand!

Hey, thanks for writing, and for watching! I am just beginning on the newly-published "Return of the Condor Heroes" by Jin Yong, so that'll be a while. But the movie adaptations of the Jin Yong "Flying Fox" novels have been on my list for a long time, and your comment has bumped them up near the top. Temple of the Red Lotus is another personal favorite for several reasons... It will take time to work something up regarding that. Thank you so much for your reply, and for the specific feedback!

You sir have a way with words, and I think all the sexy reprobates at any hillside hooters would agree. I probably would've seen The Fate of Lee Khan eventually, but it originally made my list on a Sammo-centric lark since I already had a few King Hu movies and this one always seemed to be #10 on all the top 10 lists, but I thought it was all-around great. One of those instances where it's hard to choose between the action and the intrigue if you're not already lost in the cinematography.

Both great films but I slightly prefer Rio Bravo. I like the overall story a little better, although of course they are very similar. I also think every part of Rio Bravo is flawless! I think El Dorado is fantastic but I just have always felt the ending was a bit less excellent than the rest of the film. I wanted to see Cole Thornton and Nells McCloud have a real gunfight at the end! The question of which one of them is the best gunmen is teased from their first meeting early in the film. I wanted to see more of a payoff with that. But it’s still an all-around excellent western!

Definitely agree about the Cole vs McCloud gunfight - it gets hinted at strongly but alas! If they'd done it, this might've been a more standard quick-draw western, so I'm happy with what we ended up with. Thanks for watching!

A mate of mine told me this film was rubbish and he's incorrect. It's full of tension, you know it's going to kick off at some point and it thrives on atmosphere. I always think of it as The black tavern's more mature rival, like bars that are managed by different franchises. Feng Hsu for me is like King Hu's muse, she features in pretty much every one of his great films. I can't recall a film of his I have seen apart from Come drink with me that she wasn't in. Anyway really enjoyed this mister, thank you.

Brilliant! I actually totally agree, we are treated to teasers, trailers, previews, reviews and it's so difficult to avoid. I actually think it's true of most entertainment mediums now. We have access to everything in the palm of our hands, all the time. Avoiding stuff is hard. About your comments regarding "twist" films not warranting second viewing, I disagree. Memento and Dead man's shoes both have twists, I have rewatched both once I had the reveal because I wanted to see how much stuff I didn't notice, but hey, we are all different. I’ll paste what I commented on a video I saw before this just because I think it more aligns with this video but, the first half or so is so captivating and the second half is less so and I definitely feel that’s by design. This feels like a lot to wrap my brain around but it’s like he prefers the monotony of the second life and that’s okay. Like even down to both halves being about staying at a girls house for the night and being on top of the mountain with the different girls. One scenario feels magical and the other feels plain at least to me. But I don’t think he would’ve lasted very long with maud based on her values and if he pursued her instead of the blonde he would’ve been left wondering what could’ve been with the blonde.
@paulthomas3247
@paulthomas3247 20 күн бұрын
So here's the thing: the narrator's passion for Francoise is an irrational crush, but it's also completely uninteresting. He throws out what as you say would probably be a short-lived fling with Maude that is far more exciting, but that relationship isn't necessarily doomed - except by him. I think you are 100% right that Rohmer makes the Francoise relationship less tantalizing than the Maude one on purpose. As an audience member, we want Maude, but being honest with himself, the director wants Francoise.

(late-1990’s) I figured it out and my dad just happened to have recorded it onto VHS in the 80s, so I finally got to see it again. I never read the book, but I live a few blocks away from the “Williams St. Trestle.” Never really heard it called that, but if it’s a trolly line then it’s the Interurban line. It was basically trolley/passenger train that went from one town to another about 40-50 miles away in several directions. However doing stuff like is always fraught with danger as I, like yourself have a tendency to become obsessed.
