Main theme of track 1 "To John Coltrane" can be found on Friedrich Gulda's LP Vienna Jazz Workshop from 1962 under the title "The Horn And I".

With the aiternating closeups showing the intensity of involvement, this may be the best example of this group, despite the poor volume level on the drums and trombone. Extended form, with complete avoidance of chords, that never rests.

That electric piano is a Hohner. Probably a Hohner Electra.

Hohner Electra console version. There was also a ultra-rare portable model, called Electra T. Only 200 T models were made 1968-72. We have one in near mint condition.

German television was once something to be so damn proud of with lots of culturally important broadcasts like this. But when the conservatives took over in 1982 and introduced „private television,“ the situation radically changed. In the next years the number of culturally important broadcasts diminished and by the turn of the century, they had been essentially eliminated all together, replaced by crappy „folks music“ extravaganzas where the entertainers poorly lip-sync their hits as well as junk quiz shows that insult the intelligence of many viewers. So sad, but then that‘s what nearly all conservative governments do. Thank God, there are at least these legendary recordings from a great time in German television that has been forever lost to the demands of big money and poor taste.

Well the smaller ones (like BR alpha) still do very original and unusual stuff today. They are just not that popular

Seeing what has happened in these three years, since you've posted your thoughts about the "state of the art" in German television... Don't you think that what's happening in the planet is a little bit different from your worldview, consisting in conservatives on one side, and , for christ's sake!, who?,the progressives? Rethink all, please, somethind has changed in the meanwhile...

Friedrich Gulda, the masterful interpreter of Beethovens symphonies and piano pieces ! He was a musical genius that had a big love for modern jazz and in my opinion he belonged to the creme of jazz composers and artists...with Miles Davies,John and Alice Coltrane,Sun Ra and other spiritual jazz greats...what a nice gift this video is for the fans ! Thanks...he is so rare to find these days and got a little forgotten, good to see this now in your channel ! ;)
