Things get quite treacherous by the cables, especially with snow and ice. They should replace or repair these things by now.

Are bikes allowed? Seems like one could ride pretty much the entire trail.

@speed_of_a_human 6 күн бұрын
Yes, bikes are allowed because it's not in a wilderness area. People do bike up and down it, though it's rare. It's 4400 ft of climbing! There are some stretches above tree line that you couldn't bike up because of the rocks and steepness, but a lot of the trail would be doable.

Hmm, being an Adirondack high peaker, my interpretation of beauty is quite different. There's nothing like emerging from the treeline and seeing miles of forest and lakes. I guess it's an eye of the beholder kind of thing. But, a day in the mountains is a day in the mountains - so this 14er has that going for it.

Indeed. I would rate climbing Mt. Marcy as more beautiful than this peak! To be fair, this is probably the least pretty time of year to climb; before the snow but after the green is gone.

Wow, what an epic adventure! Whaleback sounds like such a remote and challenging peak to climb, but the views must have been totally worth it. The history behind Shorty's Cabin is really interesting too, adds a cool element to the trip. Thanks for sharing all the details and taking us along on this journey - it’s inspirering me to get out there and explore more of the Sierra!

@speed_of_a_human

@@kenfleury9269 No tick issues at all right now. I think it’s very kid friendly. If you park at the Ell Pen parking lot, just off the I-87, it’s like 1.7 miles then the squeezer. If you can park at the Island Pond parking lot, it’s a lot closer. The kids would have a fun time on the rocks and bring out in the woods. Very pretty area and special that the AT goes through that small section of NY.

If you put that mountain in the middle of Yosemite Valley, it would be another Half Dome. But because it’s in the middle of nowhere, it’s unknown. Glad you got to experience this incredible summit for yourself, though the view from the Meadow is more memorable to me than the summit was.

@@speed_of_a_human I used to have the same issue. The 'secret' is to clean the area on the back of the shoe with a strong solvent like acetone, let it dry, then apply a thin layer of super glue GEL, then affix the Velcro. The Velcro will float on top the glue layer, so press hard until the glue sets, then wipe off any excess glue with your acetone.

Is it safer on a bike? Or worse because you are going faster and they could, in theory, still bite your lower leg?
@JoshMillerCA
@JoshMillerCA 5 ай бұрын
No idea what is safer statistically. I am usually hiking though. My thoughts in general are that the number of deaths or serious injuries are low enough for me to abstract it away as a standard risk of life, and I'll continue to do activities in rattlesnake country. That said, on any given day if it's snakey enough that I'm very anxious, I'll change plans like you did, since I'm out there to have a good time, not demonstrate statistical probabilities, which can't always dictate my feelings.

@@JoshMillerCA Well said! I feel the same way about mountain lions, and I’ve done a lot of solo running deep in the back country in lion areas (like the Los Padres National Forest). Although the snakes are much more prevalent and likely risk.

@@speed_of_a_human Yes! It's a similar equation with tweaked variables. It's hard to feel what I know logically though, which is that rolling an ankle, or otherwise getting injured far from the trailhead is the realest risk of them all lol. Besides driving.

Gorgeous views, it's crazy how green and jungly North East is. The Eastern Sierra is gorgeous and all but sometimes I do miss jungly mountains. What's your thoughts on that pack. Have you done any overnight fast packing trips with it?
@speed_of_a_human
@speed_of_a_human 6 ай бұрын
Yes, I did a trek from Agnew meadow to Tuolumne Meadow with it (even a bear canister). I didn't have my kit dialed in and it was painful. The pack is great, but you gotta go UL and also, I think I needed the bigger size. It's not very durable, but it's very well-designed. Sometimes it is nice to get some green!
