I disagree on Messor being the best for beginners since they get stressed quite easily from vibrations and other disturbances.

Ya but it really depends on the queen you have some don’t care some are a nightmare but I think even with the stress they are better than L.N they are a lot more interesting
@antsfinland2760Ай бұрын
@@Farleysants In my experience it has been quite consistent. I have kept M. barbarus in the past and I am keeping 2 colonies of M- minor right now and all of them panic very easily. One time I was talking on the phone while leaning on the table the colony was on and even that triggered a response. After 100 workers it usually gets better, but it might take a while especially for inexperienced keepers. In contrast Lasius niger is super chill and forgiving and much hardier than Messor. It's not like Lasius niger is boring they grow quickly and are active foragers. They are a very good starting point for beginners especially younger people.

I was half expecting to see harpegnathos venators on this list. I've only seen them leave the nest a handful of times in my 3 months of keeping them and have been horrible at catching the food I give them. They seem to notice me on the other side of my room but don't notice the cricket running circles around them. And now for the last month they have sealed their nest entrance which I have to keep clearing so I can put a half dead cricket into the nest entrance which they take and drag in. I have a couple crickets in their nest at a time and I only do this when I know they haven't eaten anything for like a week or 2. But I'm not surprised they have given up on hunting bec they are bad at it. The only times I've seen them actively hunt the prey, they have been unsuccessful.

Not to doubt you dude, but there is no way you are that experienced. Geminata are COMPLETELY different than fugax. Like, completely different. Pheidole noda is also definitely not the best small ant or pheidole in general. I get its your opinion, but there are many smaller ant species similar to pheidole noda that have more desirable traits.
@FarleysantsАй бұрын
I am going to have to disagree with you there, the reasons why they are similar is that are fast growing, small , all ways trying to escape , sting ,love protein, and they swarm there food… What would you recommend instead of noda. Have you kept the sp we are chatting about? Also have been in the hobby for 8 years now just to back up my experience. Thanks for you opinion though. :)
@AntsMichiganАй бұрын
@@Farleysants Thief ants are NOT fire ants. They are taxonomically different and live in completely different areas, show completely different behaviors, and are polymorphic. I have kept molesta, which are the American equivalent of fugax, and I was going to keep a variant of geminata native to the US, but my seller had his die. I suggest you get yourself an American species of Pheidole. Obtusospinosa, hirtula, rhea. Any. You'll see what I mean.
@FarleysantsАй бұрын
Yes I would but American sp cost a fortune for the same/very similar thing at the end of the day and have harder care requirements. Also the behaviours I mentioned above is very similar and the fact they live different areas has nothing to do with it. Also i suggest you get yourself the two sp of ants we are talking about before you comment about them….
@AntsMichiganАй бұрын
@@Farleysants American species do not cost a fortune even in europe; you're just sourcing from the wrong places. I've done extensive research and have been in this hobby for 3 years, and although it might not be as good as keeping the species, I've overall kept over 40 species so my experience level if going to be higher even if you claim to have been in the hobby so long. Doesn't matter how long you've kept ants if all you've kept is lasius niger...

Can't agree with you on the Lasius. Not only are they a decent toe dipper into the hobby, they're also a great first project for parents with their kids. Messor are fine if you like panicking after a month because the seed store has mites wandering around and the bread is going mouldy. I've heard nothing but negatives from most who try them. Pheidole noda is a good shout though.
