Nice to see you in the field. I'm trying butternut squash from seed and though my two plants had flowers, I only have 2 squash on them. Don't know much about pollinating. Should I have done something to ensure that?

When did your plants start flowering? It's possible you may get more flowers. To pollinate, begin by identifying the male and female flowers. Only the female flowers eventually bear fruit, while the males are needed for pollination. Remove a male flower from the plant, and notice the pollen on the anther, which is the middle part of the flower that sticks up. You can then take this male flower and brush it to the female stigma, which is the middle part of the flower, a few times, and the female flower should then be pollinated. You can also do this by using a q-tip and taking the pollen from the male anther to the female stigma. How to know if it worked? If it was successful, the blossom on the female will wilt and fall off, leaving the baby fruit on the stem to grow to maturity. Otherwise if it did not work, within a few days the baby will start to turn yellow, then brown, and it will eventually fall off. Don't worry if it didn't work, just try again!

Why do you lay plastic on the ground instead of mulch. Is this for economy because of the size of your field? l am a container gardener and use mulch
@veseysseeds
@veseysseeds 4 ай бұрын
Hi @dougbailey6999, the black mulch is Bio Mulch. Bio Mulch film stops weeds, warms the soil and reduces water evaporation. This mulch will produce superior results while respecting the environment. BioTelo Mulch Film, made of Mater-Bi, a corn starch based raw material, is compostable and biodegradable. It leaves no toxic residues in the ground and you can save on removal, recycling and land fill costs. www.veseys.com/ca/bio-mulch-83200.html

I’ve been a Veseys customers for a few years now. I’m in Toronto. Just got one of my orders today. I have a question. I cut down a big blue spruce in my front yard and ground down the stump but Ofcourse it’s under the surface can I plant things ontop of the stump? Would that make the soil on top of it acidic ?

I just received my perennial roots (YAY) but I'm nervous of getting them planted as possibly there's another frost this week. I've opened the bags to let air in as per instructions. Will the 1 frost kill them?
@veseysseeds
@veseysseeds 4 ай бұрын
Hi @trevor5290, It is important to plant as soon as possible after you receive them. Frost will not harm these roots, as long as the soil can be worked, they can be planted. If it is necessary to store them for a short time before planting them, open the plastic bags. If the roots appear dry, soak them for a few hours in warm water. Store in slightly moist peat moss in a cold, but not freezing location until you can plant. They can also be placed in pots of soil if planting will be delayed for more than 2 weeks. Use any peat-based potting soil and pots with drainage holes. Soak bare-root perennials in water for a few hours before planting. Unless otherwise specified, bare-root perennials are usually planted with the crown (where the shoots meet the roots) an inch below the soil surface. Firm soil gently to eliminate air pockets and water in well. Mark the area clearly since it may be a while before the plant shows itself. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our Customer Service team at 1-800-363-7333. thank you!

As far as hybrids go the seed from previous years rarely ever germinate and if you get one to germinate the vegetable or a fruit they produce usually has unsightly mutations

My grandmother grew up in the countryside of the state of Virgi,. She and my great-grandmother used to make pig feet in the oven. It's awesome to see how others on the other side of the globe in a different culture make them. And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.

How to store fall garlic?
@veseysseeds
@veseysseeds Жыл бұрын
HI @mswolfdeck For fall/hardneck garlic: After harvesting garlic, do not remove leaves and stems. These must fully dry first. Once fully dry, the leaves and stems will be completely brown and show no green. Give the necks a little squeeze. They should be hard and not pliable. Once all signs that foliage has dried, no green remains, and the necks are firm and solid, you can cut the necks 3-4 inches above the bulb. Store in a dry, cool, dark place. Dry basements are best. Use bulbs that have insect damage or did not fully dry first as the will not store as long. Don’t wash bulbs. Do not remove paper husk until ready to use.

How long does one harvest grow and when should i start another growth? My first garden and I grew a pole bean. Also, what's the best food to feed as they grow? I see that mine are fading in color. ty

Hi, Maturity dates for beans vary between 50-70 days. We suggest using Garden Inoculant when planting beans to increase your bean yields. Inoculant contains rhizobium bacteria which improves soil fertility, root systems and maximizes plant growth and yield. As the plants grow you can use a blend of 5-10-10 fertilizer, which provides nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, the three most important nutrients that beans need.

Not enough information, what kind of soil and did you choose that size pot, did you water the plants before transplanting and then once transplanted. Have you been using fertilizer at all. At this point, will you be using it at all. Transplanting is one thing, keeping the seedling alive is another.
