Where did you get the E unit drum at? Was it a spare part or did you buy it new?

This Tulsa Tank Train Set is my fourth Menards Locomotive purchase, and is by far my favorite, she’s one gorgeous set, the crew talk is awesome, the remote functions as it should the locomotives responds to the remote as it should. 👍👍🫶🫶🚂🚂

I really enjoyed the style of video, and the long silences while working on the locomotive. One critique: The background music is really irritating. I'd rather listen to nothing over the same music over and over again.

You don’t see this paint combo much because the Santa Fe silver and red looks so much nicer. There is nothing different from the previous rail line names Menards offered outside of the paint. The chrome is a good selling feature it adds bling to an otherwise plain look. After all toys gotta look good to sell and be something special from what other manufacturer’s engines look like. I’ve come to like the looks of the flashy chrome.😊 The thing I really don’t like is the distance between the two engines. The couplers are way too long.😊 I could also do without vocal, electronic controls, and hand held operation.😊 Your layout looks well presented.😊

I like that Menards seems to have adjusted the 14:11 jump starts. The horn should be moderated a bit. I have four of these engines. Three Santa Fe intro units and a CNW. My impression: not bad.

I haven’t put a review of that out, but the cycle shop was a great addition. The size of the building was ideal for that part of my layout and the lighting was perfect.

It’s a nice set but what kills it for me is the plastic gears.
@genemanno1533
@genemanno1533 Ай бұрын
It is made in china, therefor shouldn’t expect much. Longevity over geneations, and quality being major issues. Plus I don’t see these trains as cost effective seeing the build quality.
@johnandrus3901
@johnandrus3901 Ай бұрын
Plastic gears are OK. Lionel started using them in certain applications in the 50’s. I have a 2353, with a plastic gear in the drive train. A brass gear off of the motor shaft to a plastic gear. It runs just fine. Just don’t run a heavy train with the Menard’s F’s and you’ll be fine.
@genemanno1533
@genemanno1533 28 күн бұрын
A quality plastic gear of Delrin w/PTFE or an IPN branched Nylon is a good gear material. But I seriously doubt the Chinese use such a quality material in their gears. Straight Nylon is too soft as is unmodified acetal. Hence I would prefer to see brass gears and steel worms. PS I only run heavy postwar trains.😊
@johnandrus3901
@johnandrus3901 28 күн бұрын
@@genemanno1533 I’m not sure what composition the Lionel gears are. My 2353’s are seventy years old and are running just fine. Maybe this was a replacement gear on the one that I took apart. I haven’t looked at my other ones.

I really enjoy the Menards trains, I have a beta 2 or 3 of the first sante fe and have enjoyed it enough that I bought the UP when it came out. The couplers on some of the cars are stiff to close as you noticed, some don’t stay coupled well, but all in all they are a great deal. I especially love this Black bonnet paint scheme, Great video!

Thanks for sharing your experience with the MTH RailKing Hiawatha. Like you, I bought one secondhand on an auction site and mine also has the zinc rot issue. I found your video very helpful to see how to start the disassembly process. I am in search of a suitable drive block to use as a replacement for the existing one. Please post another video if you ever replace the drive block. I think there will be a lot of interest since it seems that there are several locos popping up on the auction sites that are afflicted with the same problem. Regards, Brad

Very nice! That is a great line of locomotives from Lionel’s heyday. They are great runners and easy to maintain. I’ve never like changing brushes from the top. I always worry about breaking the tabs, when I do. An excellent video, as always.

Very nice! That is one good looking locomotive. A number of railroads had air tanks mounted on the top of the engine. The Alaska Railroad is a prime example. I like the way that it revs-up and starts slowly moving. Fairly prototypical, especially with a load. EMD's have nice response, compared with GE's. Either way, you got a fine deal. An excellent video, as always.
@jamesdenny4734
@jamesdenny4734 2 ай бұрын
But why are air tanks below on the fuel tank also? You don't need them in both places. Roof top air tanks mean a bigger fuel capacity! 😮 lionel should've noted that! Get it right or go home, Lionel! 😐
@deepsleep7822
@deepsleep7822 2 ай бұрын
@james: It’s an MTH model, not Lionel. The fuel tank/air tanks are premolded. Due to costs, MTH probably used that molding on all appropriate GP’s . Since the air tanks, on top, suggest passenger service, the belly fuel tank may have been larger (longer) for additional fuel for the steam generator. MTH didn’t produce many GP’s with roof mounted air tanks, so cost for new , prototypically correct, belly fuel tank wasn’t worth the additional cost of new tooling/molds.

Excellent video! Train America Studios was a company that Mike Reagan once owned back in the early 2000’s. He actually worked on my son’s locomotive back then, and did a great job. Train America Studios was bought out, and Mike Reagan was hired by Lionel, working with them for many years, and helping Lionel to create the Lionel Legacy System and the Cab2.
