Pretty good horror game, better than I expected, too short IMO but it's so gloomy and has a strong atmosphere, mastered the Saturn version on retroachievements a few months ago, the endings give it some replay value. I've read that the game's creator was pissed off with Sony cuz it didn't sold well. That's why Enemy Zero was only for Saturn & D2 was a Sega Dreamcast exclusive

Most of them are bad, but some, while being bad, had a huge impact at the time (like Toshinden). I really like your detailed, logical and considered content. With this praise in mind though, why do you think Parasite Eve is objectively worse than MGS, Final Fantasy Tactics and RE2? Also, if the list is an attempt at objectivity; how did you come to the decision to exclude games like Gran Turismo, Tekken 3, Spyro and Crash 3 from the list altogether? Thanks for this style of content. Looking forward to 1999.
@LegendOfGames10 күн бұрын
Glad you’re liking the videos! Those were all games I looked at when making this video. I actually had already written something about Tekken 3 ahead of time, since I thought people would ask about that one: Basically, the reason I left it off the list was the same reason I didn’t include Gran Turismo. Both are great games from series where you generally can play the most recent entry to get the best experience that the series has to offer. While Tekken 3 is certainly an enjoyable and well-made experience regardless of if you played it now or then, I can’t help but feel that each new entry detracts more and more from the older entries. The same can’t really be said for something more like Resident Evil 2, where the later entries and the remake are fairly different in their mechanics and presentation, and especially for something like the Final Fantasy games, which tend to be wildly different from release to release. The games that made the list have a bit more to make them stand out from the pack of games from the year when looked back upon, as well as from their own respective series. So, I hope you understand my reasoning. It wasn’t anything against Tekken 3, but more in keeping in line with my goal of making this a ranking based on looking at these games through a modern lens. As for Crash Bandicoot 3, I think it’s very gimmicky compared to the first two. The racing levels, airplane levels, and water levels just aren’t what I consider to be very fun, or at least aren’t as good as the straightforward platforming levels. I also find the music and overall vibe much worse than the first two games. Crash 3 was the very first game I ever obsessed over and had huge hype before before release, so it’s definitely one I have a special place for. Still, I think it’s the worst of the original trilogy because of those things. Spyro’s one that was close to making the list, but I think it kinda drags on and feels like a chore after a while. It also has the issues that PS1 games that gave full control of the camera tended to have. As for why Parasite Eve is objectively worse than those other games, it has some aspects that could be better, such as how it handles items, especially ammo. I’d say the three games above it all hold up a bit better overall, though it’s been a while now since I’ve gone through the games, so I’d honestly need to play them again and look through my notes to give a more specific reasoning.

Despite playing "Enemy Zero" many times (around 20 years ago) I totally forgot that Laura was also an android. Got to admit "Enemy Zero" really made me feel uneasy my first playthrough. Don't you have to play this game in one go? From what I remember the saving/loading device doesn't save the game in a traditional way. If you turn the game off before completing it, you have to start all over again. You forgot to mention the '0' disc also has a staff credit roll showing everyone that worked on the game...Including Fumito Ueda.
@timmadone893017 күн бұрын
The Playstation version looks the best of all versions, & you can put all 3 discs in a CD player & listen to music from the game (track 2 on all 3 discs) which is exclusive to the Playstation version. Speaking of music, starting at 8:50 I hear the vocal version of the song "Torchlight" playing in the background. Kenji Eno made some great story based games as well as some fun puzzle games. "D" "D2" "Enemy Zero" "Short Warp" "You, Me, & The Cubes" "Trip'D" all need remastering & re-released (physically) in a collection for modern consoles.
@LegendOfGames17 күн бұрын
In Japan, the PlayStation version was advertised as having enhanced graphics when it was released, so it’s definitely the best one to look at. It’d be amazing if they released Warp’s games in some sort of collection.
@timmadone893017 күн бұрын
@@LegendOfGames Very true, that is how it was advertised in Japan. In fact the Japanese release also included a special collector's edition box set which included the physical game, a ceramic plate, fork, knife, (all of which had D printed on them), a mini pillow with D printed on it, a poster, a set of postcards, a replica of Laura's mother's necklace. Don't forget "Enemy Zero" also has to be completed in a single playthrough. Unlike "D" though there isn't a time limit.

Belated, but congratulations on the anniversary! Also, this is the first video I've seen about this game that actually talks about the battery draining on save and load, as well as the leads 'voice acting'. While the invisible enemies and the dreadfully limited ammo could at least be explained as creating genuine tension, the threadbare plot and two android reveals that don't really feel like they contribute... ANYTHING to the plot, feels like it all builds up to a game that certainly is 'auteur', but in the very worst ways. Still... someone has to make the weird experiments, if only to see what works and what doesn't.

I was hoping for some coverage on the Wii game.... then I remembered that I was thinking of a _The Grudge_ game, and not _The Ring._ Oops, lol. This was great! I'm familiar with the Dreamcast game from Grimbeard's video (the splatty tomato noise was something I was *so sure* he was editing in until he mentions well into the video that, no, that's the game, lol), but this is the first time I'm hearing of the Wonderswan one. I _have_ a Wonderswan but it's hard library to dig into since so much of it is Japan-focused, as in, heavy on text. Loads of One Piece RPGs, for instance, or RPGs in general, when all I want are games with more universal/jump-in-and-play appeal (games like Mega Man & Bass, Klonoa Moonlight Museum, Gunpey, Buffer Evolution or Guilty Gear Petit). So I had NO idea of the Ring on the lil' platform. Very cool to learn about it!
@LegendOfGames26 күн бұрын
Thanks! I actually wasn't aware of that Wii Grudge game. I better check it out. WonderSwan's definitely has a lot of text-based and menu-driven games, though it's got some awesome gameplay-driven games as well (it's too bad those are the ones that are a bit more expensive now.)

I knew bits about D and D2, with a certain level of intrigue from what I would hear, but this entry is a complete mystery to me. Also, great to see a new video from you! 0:31 - Well that at least explains the name difference. Companies can be pretty confusing with names for their series (both Bravely Default and Gal*Gun chose to call their 3rd game 2 for reasons I cannot fathom). 1:01 - I... wow; I never expected this sort of concept to come up. To be fair, it's not technically new to the video game industry. That was part of the reasoning behind Mario's creation (or Mr Video Game) and his numerous appearances in different games. Another case is Roland for the Amstrad line of computers, a consistent name for a character who would appear across multiple titles... usually ones which weren't original and Roland's design changed constantly. 3:47 - I think I missed your mention of the radar. I was wondering how you would avoid the invisible creatures. It's funny how this feels a lot like Alien Isolation almost 20 years earlier. 5:53 - That must be so satisfying pulling off a close range shot against an invisible enemy. It sounds frustrating but also perfect for a horror game. 8:26 - Odd concept given they don't seem well equipped to deal with invisible or dangerous aliens. 10:44 - The better gun and enemy visibility seems to be a reward for the horrors you've faced earlier. 14:28 - That's pretty neat how her loading includes a recap of what has happened. A nice refresher if you haven't played in a while (Sonic Adventure did pretty much the same thing). 16:54 - After the horrific events, I'd have thought a relaxing soak in a bath would be more appropriate.
