I didn't even grow up with the first Spyro, yet the sense of nostalgia I get from it is stronger than some of the games I actually grew up.

The original PS1 games have such good vibes, the reignited trilogy whilst playing well just feels like a spyro in unreal engine 4 tech demo in vibes imo

As someone who never owned a Nintendo 64 or played BK, Corn Kidz felt like a boring game with jank controls and a hard to read level design.

Spyro the Dragon was my first fully 3D experience in gaming that I can remember. Wouldn't have it any other way. Literally felt like teleporting to a different world and living a dream. It's honestly insane how often people casually whipped up material so magically unique and inspiring from old hardware.
@benjaminbaer54858 күн бұрын
The important thing the taxi game gets right is that its okay to play around with modern effects and retro graphics, or even combine styles. It doesn’t need to be “authentic”, unless you literally make a modern game for the actual old system.

maybe its nostalgia but the spyro 4 soundtrack still smacks

Vindicated. I love the first game. It’s just so…. Atmospheric. No one telling you what to do, no NPCs aside from the dragons. You can complete every level as soon as you get there, and there are secrets abound. I appreciate what Reignited did, it made the individual dragons more interesting and exciting, but I had memorized the delivery of the dialogue and some of the changes in Reignited just didn’t hit the same way (the Parappa reference isn’t the same).

My first experience with Spyro was the reignited trilogy. The only thing missing from these games for me is unlocking cool new abilities like in banjo kazooie.

These past few years, it seems like with the rise of liminal imagery, we've collectively realized how liminal the OG Spyro games were. Makes me wonder if it's influenced why I like the feeling of liminality so much. Even when drawing backgrounds it seems like I subconsciously seek to replicate the same feeling of a Spyro level. Artisans, Summer Forest, Autumn Plains and Sunrise Spring really look like ideal places to live.

Great review! I love Spyro even as a 31 year old dude. The music absolutely bangs and I'm glad you touched on that first. I've been bumping Dark Hollow and Ice Caverns since the year of our lord 1998.

I will say one thing I wish Reignited kept from the original, was how different the Dragons looked in appearance without clothing. My favorite Dragons were always the Peacekeepers because the fur stood out vastly to me. Not to mention just how massive they were, the fact some chose to stand on all fours, and how epic they felt due to their larger than life presence. In Reignited, the fur was completely removed and only clothing exists to differentiate them. Not to mention the size difference was also taken away. I was really excited to see them, only for them to feel as samey as the Artisan Dragons. They just have different clothing now instead of varying features that did wonders for the world building. Like you never, NEVER see fur on Dragons anymore in media these days. I'm not the only one who thinks we should've gotten giant, fluffy, Peacekeeper Dragons right? Anybody?

My favourite detail about the first game which is absent in the second game are the balloon rides. The loading screens between worlds with Spyro sitting on the hot air balloon made the worlds feel connected on the same planet. Instead of the teleporters from the second game which made it feel like they could be in completely different dimensions from one another. Also, I completed the first game to 120% and didn't find it too difficult to do. Still a lot easier than the second game which I still haven't completed yet.
@sleepycores9 күн бұрын
Hey, thanks for watching and I definitely agree on the balloon rides, they make it feel like one big journey. I did 120% on PS1 back in the day and I'd agree it's not hard to do, but it's not as fun as just cruising through the game just getting the dragons and eggs. I've done it once (actually twice if you count doing it in reginited) and that was enough for me personally!

The worst crime for spyro 1 reignited was the change to purple goo guns for twilight harbor. I dont care what they said about "creative decisions". It was clearly obviously censored for kids. I hate that they keep doubling down on this stupid excuse. There are some other examples of censorship in the trilogy that TFB made. But twilight harbor was the worst for me. Twilight harbor is supposed to be this big first time u see Gnastys army in full force. But what do they try and scare u with? Splatoon guns.. 🙄
@sleepycores9 күн бұрын
It is kinda funny how hard they overcorrected, like I get wanting to move away from realistic guns if it ups the age rating but turning them into goofy purple paintball guns is hilarious and lame.
@coreymckee48449 күн бұрын
@sleepycores i mean look, i dont like the idea of them changing it at all. But there are way better options they could have gone with. Lazer miniguns for example. And change the color to red for a more menacing look. Like yeah they chose goo guns but chose the most none threatening colors..🙄

I love that you compare to reignited, thanks for that extra effort. I think about Lofty Castle a lot. The theme for that area always pops into mind when the sky turns a cloudy pink and I think about those mysterious two planets a lot

Pseudoregalia was one of the stand-out indie titles of this year in my opinion, it just felt like a perfect platformer to me and I loved every second of it. My only gripe was that one week after I finished it, they added the minimap lol, I even used steams overlay feature to overlay a minimap over my game at one point while 100% it, anyone who played it after it was added definitely had a better experience. Yellow Taxi is another one of my favourite games this years.

The original PlayStation was my first ever console, and I was obsessed with Spyro the Dragon. Whilst Gateway to Glimmer and Year of the Dragon made many improvements, the first game is still my favourite of the three. It might be a simple platform game, but it had charm, verticality, a killer soundtrack, personality, and beautiful level design, with Ice Cavern, Wizard Peak, Tree Tops and Dark Passage being my absolute favourites. I didn't like the Reignited Trilogy. Although visually stunning and the games remained faithful, they didn't feel nostalgic for me. I'm perfectly content playing the original games, which, although made for old hardware, I think have aged well. Also, when I played the first game way back then, I found out how to reach the distant platform in tree tops by following the green thief

I have been listening to the OST of this game for as long as I can remember, which is at least as long as I ever got my first smartphone to put music on. Still listens to it, every single week, no exceptions, because I just love it that much!

Spyro 1 definitely had the best VIBE™ for sure, but why it's my personal favorite is that it's the only game in the series that requires NO backtracking. Every level can be completed 100% on your first time entering, which can't be said about Spyro 2/3 (Unless you use the Abilities Cheat Code in Spyro 2, which isn't in the remaster).
@sleepycores9 күн бұрын
Oh nice catch, when I would replay Spyro 2 as a kid I'd always pop the abilities cheat so I didn't have to backtrack :)

You couldn't play it because of loading times? Holy shit bro, you have one of the worst attention spans known to man 😂 You're missing out bud, I've been a Spyro fan since it came out too, I was excited to get something from my childhood, you privilaged weiner 😂 You do understand how big the game is compared to the original right? You also understand they had to literally remake the game from scratch right? Toys for Bob did Spyro fans good, really good. But have fun with that 10 second attention span!😂

i was never a huge fan of 3d plaltformrers as it felt lie they don't actualy focus on the paltforminng so much as exploreingg a huge world and doing other things. thats wwhy the onlly level i like in a hat in time was Alpine Skyline as it's the only level in the game that had pllatforming as a focus if i'm playing an indie platformer it's a 2d one .
